Arsenal began their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with another statement performance away from home, defeating Napoli 1-0 at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday night.
Martin Ødegaard settled a game Arsenal had largely controlled with a superb 75th-minute finish, extending the Gunners’ remarkable winning start to the new season.
Yet the narrow scoreline told only part of the story.
Arsenal created enough opportunities to win by a much wider margin, registering 26 attempts on goal and repeatedly testing Napoli’s defence. Their inability to turn that dominance into goals, however, almost allowed the Italian side a route back into the contest.
And that appeared to be the source of Mikel Arteta’s frustration late in the match.
Arteta furious as Arsenal fail to kill off Napoli
Kai Havertz released Noni Madueke, whose effort was stopped by Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić. Christos Tzolis then saw his follow-up attempt blocked.
Rather than simply celebrating Arsenal’s attacking opportunity, Arteta was reportedly furious with the reaction that followed.
TNT Sports co-commentator Lucy Ward observed the Arsenal manager racing down the touchline and shouting at Havertz, Madueke and Tzolis to recover their positions after the attack had broken down.
The incident underlined something important about Arteta’s Arsenal: even while leading a difficult Champions League away game, the manager expects every attacking player to immediately transition into defensive work.
That intensity may have been particularly important because Napoli remained capable of creating danger on the counter.
Ødegaard once again makes the difference
For all of Arsenal’s missed chances, their captain once again provided the decisive moment.
After sustained pressure around the Napoli penalty area, Ødegaard combined with Tzolis before firing a low effort from the edge of the box. The ball struck the inside of the post before finding the net in the 75th minute.
It was Ødegaard’s third goal in four matches, continuing an impressive return to form after his injury problems last season.
The timing was also significant.
Just three days earlier, the Norwegian midfielder had scored Arsenal’s winning goal against Chelsea in a 2-1 Premier League victory. His recent form is giving Arteta another major attacking weapon as Arsenal attempt to compete on multiple fronts.
Arsenal’s biggest concern was not Napoli
Ironically, Arsenal’s biggest problem in Naples was not their opponent.
It was finishing.
The Gunners repeatedly created promising opportunities but failed to put the game away. Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino, Piero Hincapié and Madueke were among those who came close, while Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret also made important saves before being replaced at half-time through injury.
Arsenal eventually finished with 26 shots — their highest total in a Champions League match since records of that nature began being tracked for the club in the competition.
That statistic explains why the final score felt somewhat misleading.
Arsenal had enough chances to make the night considerably more comfortable.
Instead, they remained vulnerable to one late mistake.
Napoli almost punished them when Kevin De Bruyne found space in the Arsenal penalty area late in the match. However, the former Manchester City midfielder chose to play the ball across goal rather than shoot, and the opportunity disappeared.
A strong European statement from last season’s finalists
The victory also continues Arsenal’s extraordinary run in the Champions League.
The Gunners won all eight of their league-phase matches last season before eventually reaching the final. They have now opened the new European campaign with another victory and remain unbeaten in the competition since November 2024.
Arsenal’s defensive record under Arteta has been particularly impressive. The club has recorded 20 Champions League clean sheets in 40 matches under the Spanish manager, more than any other side since the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign.
That combination — territorial control, defensive discipline and an ability to produce decisive moments — could prove important as the Champions League progresses.
Why Arteta’s reaction matters
The touchline incident involving Havertz, Madueke and Tzolis may appear minor, but it reflects a central principle of Arteta’s football.
Arsenal do not simply want their attackers to create chances. They are expected to participate in the team’s defensive structure immediately after possession is lost.
Against Napoli, that requirement was particularly relevant because Arsenal had committed players forward and were hunting for a second goal.
Arteta’s reaction suggested that, regardless of the quality of Arsenal’s overall performance, he was unwilling to accept a lapse in defensive responsibility.
That mentality could become increasingly important as Arsenal face stronger opponents deeper into the season.
What Arsenal must improve next
The result was excellent, but Arteta will know there are areas to address.
First, Arsenal must become more clinical. Creating 26 shots and scoring once leaves unnecessary room for an opponent to steal a result.
Second, game management remains crucial. Once Arsenal take the lead, maintaining defensive discipline during attacking transitions becomes just as important as creating another chance.
Third, Ødegaard’s form is encouraging. The captain has started the season with an increasingly influential role and has already produced decisive moments against Chelsea and Napoli.
Arsenal’s immediate European objective is therefore straightforward: build on the victory without allowing the missed chances and late defensive lapses to become a recurring problem.
The Gunners have started the campaign with five victories from five matches in all competitions. Their next challenge is to maintain that momentum while becoming more ruthless in front of goal.
For Arteta, the message from Naples appears clear: winning is essential, but winning with control is the standard Arsenal are chasing.
