The Abia State Government has announced a new directive requiring all commercial vehicles operating within the state to install and display waste bins. This policy is set to take effect from April 1, 2026, marking a significant step toward improving environmental cleanliness and public hygiene.
According to the government, the enforcement initiative aims to encourage proper waste disposal among commuters while strengthening the state’s overall sanitation system. Authorities believe that providing waste bins in public transport will reduce littering and promote responsible habits among passengers.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed this development during a press briefing held at the Government House in Umuahia. The announcement followed the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu explained that the government remains committed to maintaining high hygiene standards across the state. This effort is being driven in collaboration with the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), which continues to play a central role in sanitation enforcement and environmental management.
He highlighted that Abia State, once labeled among the dirtiest in the country, has made remarkable progress in transforming its environmental outlook. Today, the state is increasingly recognized as one of the cleanest, reflecting the administration’s ongoing commitment to sanitation reforms.
The Commissioner also confirmed that several businesses—including hotels, water production facilities, and other establishments previously shut down for environmental violations—have now resumed operations. These reopenings followed strict compliance with the required sanitation and environmental standards.
In addition, the state government has successfully addressed environmental challenges in several areas. Notable progress includes the reclamation of gully erosion sites and flood-prone zones in Amaiyi Amaogudu, Iyalu-Iberenta, and Elugwu-Nkata. These interventions are part of broader efforts to enhance environmental safety and protect communities from recurring ecological risks.
Overall, the enforcement of waste bin usage in commercial vehicles represents another proactive measure by the Abia State Government to sustain cleanliness, improve public health, and reinforce environmental responsibility across the state.
