A guy accused of defaming Benue Governor Alia has been placed on detention in prison.

Paul Gyenger, 35, was ordered to be placed under remand in a correctional facility by a Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for reportedly labeling Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia “a chronic womaniser” on social media.

Makurdi resident Gyenger was accused of defamation of character and cyberstalking.

However, due to a lack of jurisdiction, Chief Magistrate Mr. Kelvin Mbanongun declined to accept the suspect’s plea.

Mbanongun postponed the issue until December 17 in order to give it more time.

The prosecution’s attorney, Insp Godwin Ato, had informed the court that the ADC had reported the case to the governor, ASP Ver Ingyatu, on October 16, 2024, at the Anti-Cybercrimes and Narcotics Unit, Makurdi.

According to Ingyatu, the suspect shared content on a Facebook page that was owned by Terna Sunday.

“The Governor is a chronic womanizer,” Tyo said.

The complaint claimed that on the same Facebook account, the suspect also disparaged the governor’s reputation in various ways using derogatory Tiv language phrases.

According to the prosecutor, a police inquiry led to the suspect’s arrest.

Ato added that the offense violated Sections 393 of the Benue penal code of 2004 and 24 of the Cybercrimes Act of 2015.
