2027: Atiku Faces Critical Decision in Selecting Running Mate

With the African Democratic Congress (ADC) completing its primary elections, the spotlight now shifts to the pivotal question: who will be the running mate to the party’s presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar?

Previously, Atiku chose Peter Obi, the current Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, as his running mate in 2019, and former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in the 2023 elections.

Weeks ago, Atiku emerged as the ADC flag bearer, securing the highest number of votes in the party primaries.

Southeast Considerations for Running Mate

Reports from LMSINT MEDIA indicate Atiku is reportedly leaning toward selecting a running mate from the South-East. Names being mentioned include Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and former House Speaker Emeka Ihedioha.

However, Okonjo-Iweala has publicly declined such considerations, citing her commitment to her role as WTO DG, a position she assumed on March 1, 2021, becoming the first African and first woman to lead the organization. Her second term began in September 2023 and will continue until 2029.

According to Sumner Sambo, Director of Politics at Arise News, Okonjo-Iweala communicated her decision directly to Atiku’s team, emphasizing she is unwilling to leave her high-profile post for a political race in Nigeria.

Emeka Ihedioha: Another Contender

Among those under evaluation is Emeka Ihedioha, former Imo State Governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, who is also an ADC member. He is reportedly being considered as a strong potential candidate for Atiku’s running mate.

South-South Prospects with Rotimi Amaechi

While speculation favors the Southeast, Atiku’s team may also explore the South-South region. Former Minister of Transportation and two-term Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi is reportedly in discussions with Atiku, though the details remain private. Political analysts suggest these discussions could influence the final selection for the running mate.

Regional Vote Dynamics and Challenges

Sogbeye Eli, an APC chieftain, argues that selecting a Southeast running mate may not significantly boost Atiku’s votes in 2027 due to Peter Obi’s influence in the region. Eli noted that votes from both South-East and South-West are already constrained, limiting the electoral advantage.

Dele Momodu’s Social Media Statement

Adding to the political narrative, ADC chieftain and former presidential candidate Dele Momodu shared a flyer on social media portraying himself as Atiku’s running mate. The post described the ticket as “The right choice for a greater Nigeria,” generating discussions across political platforms.

Competence Over Symbolism

Addressing the rumors, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, stated that the running mate selection will prioritize competence over symbolic choices or the notion of a “spare tyre.” Shaibu emphasized that the Vice President should be capable of contributing to governance, policy formulation, economic management, and national cohesion.

“Nigeria needs a governing team, not a sole administrator. The Vice President must add value to the overall task of rebuilding the country,” Shaibu said.

Strategic Advantage of a Southeast Running Mate

Lawyer Maduabuchi Idam suggests that selecting a running mate from the Southeast could enhance national cohesion and political balance. According to Idam, this choice may also serve as a tactical counterbalance to Peter Obi’s influence, increasing Atiku’s competitiveness in the region. Without Southeast representation, securing sufficient votes from the region may pose a challenge in the 2027 elections.
