The Zamfara State Police have identified the Lakurawa terrorist group as being behind the recent explosion along the Dansadau-Gusau Road in Maru Local Government Area. The blast, which occurred on Wednesday, claimed the life of a motorist and injured three others.
Lakurawa’s Involvement Confirmed
According to Police Commissioner Muhammed Dalijan, the Lakurawa group has been seeking new territories after being driven out of Sokoto and Kebbi by military forces. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, he explained:
“As they were passing through a village towards the Birnin-Gwari forest, they planted a bomb under a bridge. A passing motorist triggered it, leading to a fatal explosion.”
Eyewitness reports indicated that members of the group were seen near the incident site shortly before the explosion.
A New Threat in Zamfara
Commissioner Dalijan highlighted that the use of explosive devices is a recent phenomenon in Zamfara. He noted that while the state has been plagued by banditry, these criminal groups lack the expertise to create or deploy bombs.
“Planting bombs is new in Zamfara. Bandits here don’t have that capability, but we are 100% certain that Lakurawa is responsible for this incident,” he stated.
Zamfara’s Security Challenges
Governor Dauda Lawal has described Zamfara as the epicenter of banditry in Nigeria. He emphasized that with decisive political action, the state could curb the activities of kidnappers and terrorists within two weeks.
Military Action
The military has pledged to intensify efforts to eliminate Lakurawa and other terror groups operating in the region, such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. Security forces aim to dismantle these groups and restore peace to the North-West.
