Peter Obi Cites Lack of Flight Access, Recalls Buhari’s Words on Poverty Alleviation

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has clarified the reason for his non-attendance at the funeral of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari. Obi explained that his inability to participate in the burial held in Daura was due to stringent flight restrictions that made the journey impossible.

Obi shared these remarks while addressing the media on Wednesday during his condolence visit to the late president’s family, a day after the burial. He noted that despite his desire to be present, there were no available flights to facilitate his trip on Tuesday, the day Buhari was laid to rest.

“Traveling here yesterday was practically impossible. There were absolutely no flights available,” Obi stated.

He further elaborated that even private flights were not an option since Katsina Airport had been closed to regular traffic to prioritize the arrival of prominent dignitaries who came to pay their last respects.

“Even if flights were available, landing at Katsina Airport was not permitted. The airspace was restricted due to the volume of dignitaries attending the burial,” he explained.

Nonetheless, Obi emphasized that showing respect to the deceased isn’t confined to the actual burial day. He reminded Nigerians that traditional mourning periods extend beyond the day of interment, validating his visit even after the burial.

“Traditionally, mourning extends over several days. Visiting today or tomorrow still honors the memory of the deceased,” he affirmed.

Reflecting on his personal encounters with the late Buhari, Obi reminisced about their meeting during his presidential campaign. During that encounter, Buhari urged him to prioritize policies that uplift Nigeria’s impoverished citizens.

“When I met him during my campaign, he gave me one heartfelt piece of advice: ‘Always care for poor Nigerians.’ That message remains with me,” Obi recalled.

“In his own capacity, I believe he sincerely tried to address poverty. His concern for the poor was evident, and I remember his earnest plea in that regard.”

Addressing the former president’s passing, Obi observed that Buhari’s death symbolizes the ephemerality of power and human life. He encouraged Nigerians, especially public officials, to serve the nation with humility, bearing in mind the inevitability of mortality.

“His passing is a powerful reminder that power is fleeting. We must all serve our nation faithfully because one day, we will answer the ultimate call from our Creator,” he stated.

Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, was given a befitting burial with full military honors in his Daura hometown on Tuesday. The solemn ceremony drew attendance from Nigeria’s top political leaders, international dignitaries, and revered traditional rulers.
