Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has publicly explained his choice to represent Nigeria’s senior national team rather than Germany, the European country where he was born and raised. In a conversation with SportyTV, the 26‑year‑old shot‑stopper reflected on his professional journey, praised his time in the Italian top flight, and shared insights into his personal ambitions both domestically and internationally.

Now in his third season with Udinese in Italy’s Serie A, Okoye described his experience with the club as fulfilling and positive. He emphasized how comfortable and content he feels in his current environment, signaling healthy progression in his professional career.

“I’m doing well and enjoying my time here. It’s my third season already, and I feel very happy in this club,” Okoye said about his tenure in Italy.

He also acknowledged the passionate support he has received from Nigerian fans around the world. Despite starting his career in Europe, Okoye emphasized how significant that encouragement has been from his early days in Germany, through his stint in the Eredivisie with Sparta Rotterdam, and into his current spell in Italy.

“Nigerians have always backed me from my time in Fortuna Düsseldorf to Rotterdam and now at Udine,” he explained, describing how meaningful that ongoing support has been.

Looking forward, Okoye shared his goals for the future. He stressed his personal drive to improve continuously and help his club achieve the best possible position this season.

“My aim as an athlete is to maximise my potential and contribute to this club’s success,” he said, expressing his hopes for a strong finish.

Okoye also touched on his strong connection to Nigeria, rooted in his upbringing and family background. Although he was raised in Germany, the influence of his Nigerian father helped shape his identity and footballing aspirations from a young age.

“Even though I grew up in Germany, my father’s presence and Nigerian roots are a big part of who I am,” Okoye revealed.

When it came to choosing which nation to represent at international level, Okoye said he always felt a strong inclination toward Nigeria. Despite having featured for German youth teams in his early career, he made the switch to the Super Eagles as soon as the opportunity presented itself, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

“Representing Nigeria was always the goal for me. I knew I wanted to play for this country, and when the chance came, it felt like a dream come true.”

This decision eventually led to Okoye earning caps for Nigeria after debuting in a friendly match against Brazil, marking the start of his international journey with the Super Eagles.

Recently, he was named in the 23‑man squad for upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan in Antalya, Turkey, showing he remains an important part of Nigeria’s plans as they prepare for key fixtures ahead.
