US President Donald Trump has accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of leveraging the ongoing Canada-US trade conflict to maintain his hold on power. This claim followed what Trump described as a “somewhat friendly” conversation between the two leaders on Wednesday.
In a social media statement, Trump alleged that Trudeau was unable to specify when Canada’s next federal election would take place, leading him to suspect that the prime minister was using the trade tensions to extend his leadership.
Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January, is set to step down after the Liberal Party elects a new leader this weekend. The selected candidate will assume the role of prime minister and possess the authority to call the country’s next general election, which must occur no later than October. However, analysts suggest it could happen sooner.
Unlike the US, Canada allows its prime ministers to call elections at any point within a five-year term, offering Trudeau’s successor flexibility in setting the date.
Since Trump’s return to the White House in January, tensions between him and Trudeau have escalated, particularly over trade policies and the issue of fentanyl trafficking. This week, Trump moved forward with imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, prompting Trudeau to express frustration. He acknowledged Trump’s intelligence but criticized the tariffs as a “very dumb thing to do.”
Trudeau further accused Trump of deliberately attempting to destabilize Canada’s economy, potentially making it easier for annexation—a claim that echoes Trump’s previous remarks about making Canada the 51st US state.
Trump has consistently referred to Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau,” underscoring his critical stance towards the Canadian leader.
