President Tinubu Reshuffles University Leadership Across Nigeria

In a significant shake-up in Nigeria’s higher education sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made sweeping changes in the leadership of several federal universities. Among the most notable changes is the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, along with the appointment of new Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors across multiple institutions.

Leadership Changes at Yakubu Gowon University (Formerly UNIAbuja)

Following the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the institution’s governing council and dismissed Professor Aisha Maikudi from her role as Vice-Chancellor.

To fill the position, Professor Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month tenure. However, she will not be eligible to apply for the permanent role once the position becomes open.

Additionally, Senator Lanre Tejuoso, who previously served as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been named Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University. His former role in Makurdi will now be occupied by Senator Joy Emordi, who has been reassigned as Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.

New Leadership at UNN and Other Universities

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has also undergone leadership changes. President Tinubu removed Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu as Acting Vice-Chancellor, even though his tenure was set to end on February 14. His replacement, Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam, will serve in an acting capacity for six months and is likewise ineligible to apply for the permanent position.

Other key appointments at UNN include:

  • Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo as Pro-Chancellor of UNN, replacing Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, who has been reassigned as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo.
  • Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, previously Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, will now take over as Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja.
  • Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current council member at UNN, has been appointed as Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Strengthening Higher Education in Nigeria

These appointments, which are effective immediately, reflect President Tinubu’s commitment to reforming Nigeria’s tertiary education system. The restructuring aims to:

  • Enhance governance and transparency in university administration.
  • Promote academic excellence through new leadership strategies.
  • Ensure greater accountability in managing federal university resources.

With these changes, the Tinubu administration seeks to position Nigeria’s universities for global competitiveness, ensuring that students and faculty operate in a more efficient and well-governed academic environment.
