President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized enhanced retirement benefits for Nigerian Army Generals, including bulletproof SUVs and paid international medical trips, under the newly signed Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS) for Armed Forces personnel.
Key Retirement Benefits for Senior Officers
Under the new policy, which took effect on December 14, 2024, retired military generals serving for 35 years are entitled to several luxury allowances, such as:
- Bulletproof SUV: Each retiring general will receive a bulletproof SUV or its equivalent, with a backup vehicle maintained and replaced every four years by the Armed Forces.
- Medical Benefits: Retired generals are entitled to fully funded foreign medical treatment and a $20,000 estacode for the medical trip. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) will receive even higher coverage.
- Domestic Aides: Generals will receive five domestic staff, including two cooks, two stewards, and a civilian gardener, along with a security officer and residential guards.
Entitlements for Top Military Officers
The Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (HTACOS) apply to the highest ranks of the Nigerian military:
- Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Service Chiefs will receive:
- Bulletproof SUV with a backup vehicle
- Full medical cover in Nigeria and abroad
- $20,000 annually for foreign medical trips
- Five domestic aides, including two cooks, two stewards, and a gardener
- Three military drivers, an orderly, and a security officer
- Retention of all military uniforms for ceremonial use
- Personal firearms (to be retrieved upon demise)
- Lieutenant Generals and Equivalent Ranks:
- Two Toyota Hilux vehicles or a Toyota Land Cruiser
- $20,000 annual medical coverage
- Two cooks, two stewards, four residential guards, and two drivers
Benefits for Major-Generals and Brigadier-Generals
- Major-Generals and Brigadier-Generals:
- Toyota Land Cruiser or equivalent
- $15,000 annual medical coverage
- One cook, one steward, two guards, a driver, and a security orderly
- One-Star Generals (Brigadier-Generals):
- Toyota Camry or equivalent
- $10,000 annual medical coverage
- Two residential guards, a driver, and a security orderly
Retirement Benefits for Colonels
Colonels and equivalent ranks will receive:
- Toyota Corolla or equivalent
- Free medical care within Nigeria
Policy Adjustment and Justification
The upward revision of the HTACOS benefits aligns with Nigeria’s current socio-economic realities. The provision of luxurious retirement packages for senior military officers has been a longstanding practice, with the new adjustments aimed at reflecting modern standards of living.
