Renowned Nigerian performer and social activist, Charles Oputa, widely recognized as Charly Boy, has shared the background story behind the naming of the iconic Charly Boy Bus Stop in Lagos—an area recently renamed by local authorities.

During an interview on “The Morning Brief”, a breakfast show aired by Channels Television, the entertainer recounted how the bus stop located in the Gbagada axis of Lagos was originally named in his honor back in the early 1990s. According to Charly Boy, the naming was a gesture of appreciation from the residents for his consistent contribution to the local community.

He explained that the recognition stemmed from the deep connection he had with Gbagada residents during that period. His philanthropic efforts, which impacted people across different sectors of society—including military veterans, commercial motorcyclists, pensioners, and students—led the locals to name the bus stop after him as a token of gratitude.

“There was a time I actually lived near that bus stop,” Charly Boy recalled. “During the early 90s, those who were living around Gbagada decided it was appropriate to name the bus stop after me due to the value I added to the community.”

He elaborated further: “Many categories of people—okada riders, pensioners, military personnel, and even ordinary citizens—benefited from me in various ways. I gave out scholarships to help young people further their education. I don’t usually like to brag about what I’ve done or haven’t done, but I really did my best for that community when I was still residing there. That’s why they honored me by naming the place ‘Charly Boy Bus Stop.’”
