Abeokuta, Ogun State — The Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association (ROSOWA) has renewed its commitment to reducing road crashes through a public awareness campaign targeted at motorists, transport operators, and passengers in Ogun State. The sensitisation exercise, which took place at Kuto Motor Park in Abeokuta, was organised as part of ongoing efforts to promote safer driving habits and encourage greater compliance with road traffic regulations. Leading the campaign was Mrs Morenikeji Ogunjobi, wife of the Ogun Sector Commander and Chairperson of ROSOWA in the state, who addressed commercial drivers, commuters, and other road users during the outreach. She stressed that many road crashes recorded on Nigerian roads can be avoided if drivers and passengers take personal responsibility and follow established safety measures. According to her, simple safety practices such as avoiding excessive speed, maintaining vehicles regularly, respecting traffic rules, and showing patience on the road can significantly reduce accidents. The awareness programme highlighted several major causes of road crashes, including reckless driving, overloading, driving while distracted by mobile phones, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failure to use seat belts. Participants at the motor park were also educated on the importance of vehicle inspections, proper road discipline, and obeying traffic signs to protect both drivers and other road users. Members of ROSOWA interacted directly with transport workers and passengers, creating an opportunity for questions, discussions, and practical guidance on safer road behaviour. The association encouraged motorists to embrace patience, tolerance, courtesy, and discipline, noting that responsible road use remains a shared duty among all road users. Mrs Ogunjobi further reaffirmed ROSOWA’s support for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in its campaigns aimed at improving road safety awareness and preventing avoidable deaths caused by crashes. The latest initiative comes amid continued calls from road safety agencies for Nigerians to adopt safer driving habits, especially among commercial transport operators who play a major role in passenger movement across the country. Road users are expected to continue prioritising safety measures as authorities and advocacy groups intensify public education efforts nationwide.
