Professor Dayo Faduyile of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election after securing the highest number of votes in the keenly watched contest. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Faduyile as the winner following the conclusion of the election process across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district. The declaration was made at the collation centre in Okitipupa Local Government Area by the Returning Officer for the election, Professor Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja. According to the final results released by INEC, Faduyile recorded 68,474 votes to defeat other candidates who participated in the election. Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) came second with 1,411 votes, while Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action People’s Party (APP) received 213 votes. Clement Funso-Nejo of the Boot Party (BP) polled 70 votes. INEC reported that a total of 70,770 votes were cast during the by-election, with 602 ballots rejected as invalid. Election Held Across Six Ondo South LGAs The senatorial contest was conducted across Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Irele, Odigbo, and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo local government areas. The Ondo South Senatorial District seat became vacant after the former occupant, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, was appointed as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, creating the need for a fresh election to fill the position. INEC Reviews Electoral Process Ahead of 2027 Speaking after the announcement, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, described the election as an important exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections. Agboke said the commission would assess the challenges experienced during the process and use the lessons learned to improve future elections. He also confirmed that INEC officials deployed to difficult riverine communities completed their duties safely, with no major security concerns reported.
