Six governorship aspirants under the platform of the All Progressives Congress have openly rejected the reported endorsement of former Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Yobe State. The aspirants maintained that only a transparent, credible, and constitutionally recognised primary election process would be acceptable ahead of the party’s governorship selection. Their resolution was contained in a joint statement released after a strategic meeting held on Thursday in Abuja, where the politicians discussed issues affecting the future of the party in Yobe State. Among those who attended the meeting were Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, senator representing Yobe South; Bashir Sheriff Machina, former Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council; and Kashim Musa Tumsah, a former board member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. Other aspirants involved include Engr. Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja, former Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA); Lawan Kolo Geidam, former Mandate Secretary for Youth and Sports in the Federal Capital Territory; and Mohammed Alkali Baba, former Inspector-General of Police. The aspirants collectively described the alleged adoption of Baba Mallam Wali as inconsistent with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the constitution guiding the APC. According to the statement, the endorsement process did not comply with the established legal and democratic procedures expected in selecting a consensus candidate within the party. Part of the communiqué stated that the reported endorsement failed to align with the requirements of the Electoral Act 2026 as well as the APC constitution, making the process unacceptable to the concerned aspirants. They further stressed that all relevant legal provisions relating to consensus arrangements must be strictly observed to guarantee the emergence of a credible and widely accepted governorship candidate for the party in Yobe State. The aspirants also warned that where a genuine consensus cannot be reached among all interested parties, the APC should organise direct primary elections that are free, transparent, and credible in line with the party’s official guidelines. According to them, the proper procedures were not followed in the alleged selection of Baba Mallam Wali as the consensus candidate, adding that any consensus arrangement must comply fully with existing electoral laws and internal party regulations. A legal dispute involving a Nigerian passenger and international airline operator, British Airways, has continued at the Federal High Court in Abuja following allegations of missing carry-on luggage during a delayed boarding process. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has scheduled July 2 for the continuation of hearing in a lawsuit filed by Mr. Amechi Michael against British Airways over the alleged disappearance of his carry-on bag. During the resumed proceedings, the claimant, Amechi Michael, was cross-examined by counsel representing the airline, Mr. John Godwin. While responding to questions before the court, the plaintiff explained that he immediately reported the incident to the airline’s customer service department after discovering that his luggage could not be located. According to him, the airline later referred the matter to the United Kingdom-based Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) for arbitration and settlement discussions. Amechi further disclosed that the arbitrator eventually delivered a ruling in his favour regarding the issue of flight delay compensation. However, he stated that the arbitration decision failed to address the alleged disappearance of his carry-on luggage. The claimant told the court that he was dissatisfied with the outcome of the arbitral process because the issue concerning the missing bag was not resolved. As a result, he rejected the award and approached the Federal High Court in Abuja to seek legal redress. He maintained that British Airways had a responsibility to ensure the safety and return of his belongings after the luggage was handed over to the airline’s staff during the boarding process. The plaintiff also accused members of the airline’s crew of negligence, arguing that the airline failed in its duty of care toward him as a passenger. Counsel to the plaintiff, Barrister Abiola Olaitan, later informed the court of her decision to close the claimant’s case after presenting the available evidence and testimony. Following the submissions, the presiding judge, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, adjourned the matter until July 2 for continuation of trial and presentation of the defence. Court documents showed that the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1293/2025, was filed against British Airways over the alleged loss of a carry-on bag during a delayed boarding exercise. According to the plaintiff, the incident occurred after a cabin crew member requested that he hand over the luggage for safekeeping before boarding the aircraft.
