Nigeria Ranks Sixth in Global Terrorism Index 2025, Records 565 Fatalities

Nigeria has ascended to the sixth position in the 2025 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) with a score of 7.658, marking a shift from its eighth-place ranking in 2023 and 2024. This ranking underscores the persistent security challenges in the nation. Global Terrorism Rankings: Burkina Faso Tops the List The latest GTI report, released on March 5, 2025, identified Burkina Faso as the country most impacted by terrorism, scoring 8.581. Other nations in the top five include Pakistan (8.374), Syria (8.006), Mali (7.907), and Niger (7.776). Nigeria follows closely behind, highlighting the ongoing instability in West Africa. Rounding out the top ten most terrorism-affected countries are Somalia (7.614), Israel (7.463), Afghanistan (7.262), Cameroon (6.944), and Myanmar (6.929). Further rankings placed the Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.768), Iraq (6.582), India (6.410), Colombia (6.381), and Russia (6.267) in positions 11 through 16. Rising Fatalities: 565 Killed in Nigeria in 2024 According to the GTI, terrorism-related deaths in Nigeria totaled 565 in 2024, reflecting a consistent rise over the past two years. The report noted that global terrorism deaths have declined by nearly a third since 2015, with Nigeria and Iraq recording the most significant reductions over time. Nigeria’s terrorism fatalities peaked at 2,101 in 2014 before decreasing to 392 in 2022, the lowest since 2011. However, the number surged by 34% in 2023, reaching 533, and continued to rise in 2024 to 565 deaths. IS-Sahel Expands Influence in West Africa The report highlighted the increasing presence of IS-Sahel, a militant group extending its operations beyond the Liptako-Gourma region—comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—into countries such as Algeria, Benin, and Nigeria. In 2024, IS-Sahel was responsible for 16 attacks in Nigeria, alongside 12 in Niger, six in Mali, and one in Burkina Faso. Furthermore, the number of nations impacted by at least one terrorist attack increased from 58 in 2023 to 66 in 2024, the highest recorded since 2018. The Sahel Region: Global Epicenter of Terrorism Terrorism remains a significant global threat, with shifting trends and increasing security challenges. The Sahel region accounted for 51% of all terrorism-related deaths in 2024, marking an almost tenfold increase since 2019. Fatalities linked to conflicts in the region exceeded 25,000, with 3,885 attributed specifically to terrorist incidents. Among the ten most-affected nations, five are located in the Sahel. Although Burkina Faso remains the hardest-hit country, both its terrorist fatalities and attacks saw a decline in 2024—dropping by 21% and 57%, respectively. Despite this improvement, Burkina Faso still accounted for one-fifth of global terrorism deaths. Niger’s Counterterrorism Setback The findings also emphasized the fragile nature of counterterrorism advancements. Niger, for instance, recorded the highest increase in terrorism-related deaths globally in 2024, surging by 94% to 930 fatalities. This reversed the progress seen in 2022 when the country had one of the most significant improvements in terrorism impact. The report cautioned that the gains made in Burkina Faso might be temporary, considering the volatile nature of the region. Conclusion: The Need for Stronger Counterterrorism Measures With Nigeria now ranking sixth on the GTI, addressing the root causes of terrorism and enhancing security strategies remain crucial. As militant activities continue to evolve, coordinated international and regional efforts will be essential in mitigating the threats posed by extremist groups. Trump Claims Trudeau Exploits Tariff Dispute for Political Gain

US President Donald Trump has accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of leveraging the ongoing Canada-US trade conflict to maintain his hold on power. This claim followed what Trump described as a “somewhat friendly” conversation between the two leaders on Wednesday. In a social media statement, Trump alleged that Trudeau was unable to specify when Canada’s next federal election would take place, leading him to suspect that the prime minister was using the trade tensions to extend his leadership. Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January, is set to step down after the Liberal Party elects a new leader this weekend. The selected candidate will assume the role of prime minister and possess the authority to call the country’s next general election, which must occur no later than October. However, analysts suggest it could happen sooner. Unlike the US, Canada allows its prime ministers to call elections at any point within a five-year term, offering Trudeau’s successor flexibility in setting the date. Since Trump’s return to the White House in January, tensions between him and Trudeau have escalated, particularly over trade policies and the issue of fentanyl trafficking. This week, Trump moved forward with imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, prompting Trudeau to express frustration. He acknowledged Trump’s intelligence but criticized the tariffs as a “very dumb thing to do.” Trudeau further accused Trump of deliberately attempting to destabilize Canada’s economy, potentially making it easier for annexation—a claim that echoes Trump’s previous remarks about making Canada the 51st US state. Trump has consistently referred to Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau,” underscoring his critical stance towards the Canadian leader. Gospel Singer Mercy Chinwo Files Defamation Lawsuit Against VeryDarkMan, Seeks Retraction and Apology

Gospel sensation Mercy Chinwo has initiated legal action against popular social media influencer and blogger Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), over alleged defamatory statements. The lawsuit was filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Allegations and Defamation Claims The lawsuit arises from accusations made by VDM on social media, where he alleged that Chinwo was involved in a contractual dispute and had diverted $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also called EeZee Tee. These claims, according to Chinwo, are entirely false and damaging to her reputation. Legal documents submitted by Chinwo’s counsel, Pelumi Olajengbesi, demand that VDM immediately delete all defamatory content, issue a retraction, and publicly apologize for the false claims. The singer also provided substantial documentary evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to prove that the allegations were baseless. Court Proceedings and Legal Demands On February 17, 2025, a Federal High Court in Lagos upheld the existing arrest warrant for EeZee Tee regarding alleged fraudulent conversion, with the arraignment scheduled for March 6, 2025. However, the new lawsuit against VDM focuses solely on the defamation of Mercy Chinwo. According to Olajengbesi, VDM made a series of Instagram posts on February 2, 3, 4, 5, 12, and 17, 2025, in which he claimed that Chinwo had been booking shows independently and failing to remit payments to the record label. These statements, the lawsuit contends, were made maliciously to tarnish the singer’s reputation and mislead the public. Chinwo’s Response and Legal Reliefs Sought Chinwo asserts that she has no personal or professional relationship with VDM and that his portrayal of her in his videos was both defamatory and injurious to her career. Senate Rejects Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Petition Against Senate President Akpabio

Senate Rules Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Petition Procedurally Invalid Abuja – The Nigerian Senate has officially dismissed a petition submitted by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in which she alleged misconduct. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South), declared the petition invalid due to procedural errors and legal constraints. During the probe session on Wednesday, Senator Imasuen stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition was “dead on arrival” as it failed to comply with Order 40 of the Senate Standing Orders. He explained that the senator personally signed the document rather than having it endorsed by another party, which rendered it procedurally flawed. Additionally, he emphasized that the allegations contained in the petition were already being addressed in court, making them sub judice and beyond the Senate’s purview. Despite being scheduled to appear before the committee at 2:00 PM, Akpoti-Uduaghan failed to attend the session, which eventually commenced at 2:58 PM. Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), who was also expected at the meeting, arrived late but was present when the deliberations began. The petition stemmed from an earlier plenary session incident involving Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Akpabio. Following the incident, the matter was referred to the Senate Ethics Committee for a detailed review. The committee was mandated to conduct a thorough investigation and present its findings within two weeks. Senator Adaramodu highlighted that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public dispute with the Senate President, particularly regarding seat allocation, had adversely impacted the Senate’s image. He further referenced an interview she granted on Brekete Family via Human Rights Radio and TV, where she restated her claims against Akpabio. Following these deliberations, the Senate reaffirmed its decision to reject the petition based on the procedural violations and legal restrictions surrounding the case. Rivers State Assembly Moves to Dismiss Commissioners and Political Appointees

Political Turmoil as Rivers Assembly Demands Removal of Commissioners The Rivers State House of Assembly, primarily composed of loyalists to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has intensified efforts to challenge Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration. In a new development, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, has officially requested the dismissal of 19 commissioners and political appointees who, according to the Assembly, were not properly screened. Amaewhule, in a letter addressed to the governor on Wednesday, asserted that these appointments violated the 1999 Constitution, as they were made without legislative approval. He further urged Governor Fubara to submit a new list of nominees for screening and proper vetting by the Assembly. This demand marks an escalation in the ongoing rift between the state legislature and the executive branch, deepening the already intense political crisis in Rivers State. One of the critical issues raised in the letter was the governor’s failure to present Dagogo Iboroma for screening as the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, which, according to the Speaker, contravenes sections 192 (2) and (5) and section 195 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended. The Assembly further insisted that Governor Fubara submit a fresh list of nominees for various executive positions within 48 hours. Commissioner for Environment Dismisses Lawmakers’ Demands Reacting to the Assembly’s directive, Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Sydney Tambari, strongly opposed the move, stating that the lawmakers were overstepping their constitutional bounds. He described their actions as baseless and politically motivated. Tambari emphasized that all the commissioners had already been screened and confirmed by the former Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, who was legally recognized by the courts as the legitimate Speaker at the time. He further argued that following Ehie’s resignation, his successor, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, continued the screening process, making the Assembly’s request redundant. “There is no need for Governor Fubara to submit a fresh list. The commissioners were duly screened, and the demand for their removal is irrelevant,” Tambari stated. He also took a swipe at the lawmakers, pointing out that their actions were inconsistent with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which focused on the 2024 budget rather than the removal of commissioners and political appointees. According to him, the budget presentation falls solely under the governor’s discretion and has already been addressed. Escalating Political Crisis in Rivers State This latest confrontation between the Rivers State executive and legislature further underscores the deep-seated political tensions affecting governance in the state. With both factions standing their ground, the political atmosphere remains uncertain, raising concerns over the stability of governance in Rivers State. Subscription Fee Hike: FCCPC Takes Legal Action Against MultiChoice

Nigerians Criticize MultiChoice Over DStv, GOtv Subscriber Loss The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has filed a lawsuit against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and its Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, for failing to comply with regulatory directives, hindering an active investigation, and violating provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018. On February 27, 2025, FCCPC instructed MultiChoice Nigeria to retain its existing subscription prices for DStv and GOtv while an ongoing review of its proposed tariff increment was underway. However, despite this official directive, MultiChoice proceeded with the price adjustment on March 1, 2025, disregarding the Commission’s order. According to Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at FCCPC, this violation prompted legal proceedings, which were officially announced in Abuja today. Impact on Subscribers and Public Reaction The controversial price hike has sparked public outcry, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over MultiChoice’s disregard for regulatory oversight. Reports indicate that the company recently lost approximately 243,000 DStv and GOtv subscribers due to dissatisfaction with its pricing policies. Regulatory and Legal Consequences The legal battle between FCCPC and MultiChoice Nigeria could set a precedent for consumer protection and corporate accountability in the country’s pay-TV sector. Industry experts suggest that a ruling in favor of FCCPC may lead to stricter regulations on price adjustments by subscription-based services in Nigeria. Senate Rejects Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Petition Against Akpabio

…Petition Declared Invalid as Senator Fails to Appear Before Ethics Committee Abuja – The Nigerian Senate has ruled against a petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, dismissing the allegations of sexual harassment due to procedural flaws. During a Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions hearing on Wednesday, Chairman Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South) declared the petition null and void. He cited a violation of Order 40 of the Senate Standing Orders, noting that Akpoti-Uduaghan personally signed the petition rather than securing an endorsement from a third party, which rendered it procedurally defective. Furthermore, Imasuen pointed out that the matters raised in the petition were already subject to court proceedings, making them sub judice and beyond the committee’s jurisdiction. Despite being scheduled to appear before the committee, Akpoti-Uduaghan was absent at the designated session. The hearing, set for 2:00 PM, commenced at 2:58 PM when the chairman arrived after waiting for both Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South). While Adaramodu arrived at 2:50 PM, Akpoti-Uduaghan failed to attend the meeting. The petition initially reached the Ethics Committee two weeks earlier following a plenary session incident involving Akpoti-Uduaghan. In response, Senate President Akpabio directed the committee to investigate the matter and submit findings within two weeks. During Senate discussions, Adaramodu highlighted that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public confrontation with the Senate President over seat allocation had negatively impacted the legislative body’s reputation. He also referenced her interview with Brekete Family on Human Rights Radio and TV, where she reiterated the allegations against Akpabio. Following these deliberations, the Senate upheld the Ethics Committee’s recommendation, officially discarding the petition as invalid. Rhapsody of Realities March 5th 2025, ACKNOWLEDGE THE GOOD IN YOU

Pastor Chris Oyahkilome DSc DSc DD That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus (Philemon 1:6). In our previous study, I explained the insightful words of the Apostle Paul in Romans 15:29, where he expressed his intentions regarding his visit to the Roman church: “And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.” If Paul could walk in the fullness of the blessings of the Gospel, so can you! It’s your calling. Many are however at sea as to how to walk in this reality; how to walk in the fulness of the blessing of the Gospel of Christ! But our theme verse reveals an important truth that’s very key. It says, “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.” That means the sharing or participation of your faith, the exercise of your faith will become effectual through the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. In other words, the way to make your faith effectual is by acknowledging the good things in you in Christ Jesus. The word “acknowledge” is translated from the Greek “epignōsis.” It means to have full discernment, a recognition. It is the knowledge in which the knower relates to that which is known; it’s a knowledge that involves a relationship with the object of knowledge. It is a precise, accurate and correct understanding of what God has made you and what He has deposited in you through the Gospel. Now that you’re born again and in Christ Jesus, there are certain good things within you that He wants you to take knowledge of. The Word of God and the ministry of the Holy Spirit remain the only reliable source for you to acquire this kind of knowledge. Again, in Colossians 1:9, Paul uses the same word, epignosis: “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge, (Greek: epignosis) of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” Walking in the fullness of the blessing of the Gospel requires active acknowledgement, full and precise knowledge of the good things within you in Christ. Blessed be God! PRAYERDear Father, I thank you for the good things that are in me. I acknowledge and walk in the fullness of these blessings, producing results in my life and being a blessing to others. Through the Word and the Spirit, I gain accurate knowledge of my inheritance in Christ and live in the reality of it, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Trump Claims Zelensky Ready for Russia Talks and US-Ukraine Mineral Deal Finalization

Washington (AFP) – Former US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had informed him of Kyiv’s willingness to engage in peace talks with Russia. Additionally, discussions regarding a crucial US-Ukraine mineral agreement were nearing finalization. This statement follows their highly publicized White House meeting, which has fueled diplomatic tensions. Strained US-Ukraine Relations Amid Suspended Military Aid The recent fallout between the United States and Ukraine has unfolded in public view, particularly after Trump’s controversial remarks in the Oval Office last week. The US decision to suspend key military assistance to Ukraine has further strained the alliance between both nations. In an attempt to mend ties, Zelensky posted on social media, expressing regret over the conflict and his desire to “make things right.” Trump later read a letter in Congress that echoed this sentiment, confirming Ukraine’s commitment to peace negotiations. Ukraine Open to Peace Talks and Mineral Agreement Addressing US lawmakers, Trump quoted Zelensky’s statement: “Ukraine is ready to engage in negotiations as soon as possible to advance lasting peace. No one desires peace more than the Ukrainian people.” The Ukrainian president also acknowledged America’s contributions in helping Ukraine maintain its sovereignty. Additionally, Trump stated that Ukraine was ready to finalize a mineral and security agreement with the US at any convenient time. This deal, which was left unsigned following last week’s White House meeting, would grant the US access to Ukraine’s valuable mineral resources. Tensions Rise as Trump Halts Military Assistance Trump’s unexpected halt to military aid for Ukraine has triggered strong reactions from allies. The European Union, excluded from US-Russia peace discussions, expressed concern that any proposed truce might favor Moscow. Meanwhile, Russia welcomed Trump’s decision, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov describing it as “a step that could encourage Ukraine to seek a peaceful resolution.” The New York Times reported that this suspension affects millions of dollars’ worth of military supplies originally destined for Ukraine. Backlash from Ukraine and NATO Allies Many Ukrainians viewed Trump’s decision as a betrayal. A Kyiv-based financial analyst named Sofia described it as “a stab in the back.” Army volunteer Sergiy Sternenko accused Trump of advocating Ukraine’s surrender. Poland also criticized the US move, stating that NATO allies had not been consulted. French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou informed lawmakers that entire shipments of US military supplies bound for Ukraine had been halted. Proposed Truce and Military Deployment Concerns Reports indicate that Britain and France are exploring a temporary one-month ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, potentially supported by ground troops. This development has sparked debate, with US Vice President JD Vance ridiculing the idea of European nations deploying troops. While the future of the US-Ukraine partnership remains uncertain, Zelensky reaffirmed Kyiv’s readiness to proceed with the mineral agreement and continue seeking robust security guarantees for Ukraine. Conclusion With diplomatic tensions escalating and geopolitical shifts unfolding, the fate of Ukraine’s negotiations with both the US and Russia remains unclear. While Trump’s latest remarks indicate a willingness to push for peace, the broader international response suggests a complex and uncertain road ahead. Sanwo-Olu Urges Collective Action for Malaria Eradication in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for unified efforts to combat malaria, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among government agencies, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and citizens. Speaking at the launch of the ‘Pathway to Malaria Pre-Elimination and Digitisation Programme,’ he reiterated the need for persistent action to achieve a malaria-free Lagos. Digital Innovation in Malaria Eradication The newly launched initiative aims to revolutionize malaria control through digital advancements and public-private partnerships. With the presence of Dr. Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, the program sets a roadmap to eliminate malaria using technology-driven interventions. Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the severe economic and social consequences of malaria, stressing its impact on productivity, household incomes, and education. He emphasized that malaria eradication is not just a health priority but a crucial step in boosting Lagos State’s economy. Call for Accurate Diagnosis and Public Awareness Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to embrace a “test-before-treatment” approach, cautioning against self-diagnosis and improper malaria treatment. He commended the integration of digital tools in the program, which will facilitate real-time tracking of malaria cases, ensuring efficient interventions. Additionally, he praised the Lagos State Ministry of Health for its transparency and data-driven strategies aimed at achieving the 2025 malaria elimination target. He also encouraged Lagosians to become advocates, spreading awareness about malaria prevention and the significance of accurate diagnosis. Minister of Health Applauds Lagos’ Leadership in Malaria Control Dr. Iziaq Salako lauded Lagos State for its proactive measures in malaria management, aligning with the Federal Ministry of Health’s ‘Rethinking Malaria’ initiative. He noted that Lagos boasts the lowest malaria prevalence in Nigeria, with a 2% infection rate as per the 2021 survey. The minister emphasized the importance of integrating digital health solutions to enhance malaria case management and improve treatment accuracy. He also underscored the private sector’s role in healthcare, noting that over half of Nigerians initially seek treatment from private health facilities. Strengthening public-private partnerships, he argued, is essential to improve diagnostic accuracy and ensure effective malaria treatment. Commissioner for Health Highlights Strategic Interventions Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, detailed the progress made in malaria control, attributing the success to strategic interventions and digital health tracking. He highlighted that while Nigeria accounts for 27% of global malaria cases, Lagos has reduced its prevalence to 2.6%, moving towards the malaria pre-elimination phase. He further stressed the importance of sustained efforts in early diagnosis, vector control, and public education. By integrating digital tools into healthcare services, Lagos can ensure accurate diagnosis, prevent drug resistance, and optimize malaria treatment outcomes. WHO and World Bank Endorse Lagos’ Malaria Fight Dr. Kazadi Walter Mulombo, the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, commended Lagos’ leadership in urban malaria control, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based interventions. He acknowledged that Nigeria accounts for 31% of global malaria-related deaths, making malaria elimination a national priority. Similarly, Dr. Ndiame Diop, Country Director for the World Bank in Nigeria, highlighted the economic burden of malaria. He noted that 30% of under-five deaths and 60% of outpatient visits in Nigeria are linked to malaria. He stressed the need for increased funding and community-led initiatives to reduce out-of-pocket malaria treatment costs, which currently stand at 95%. Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships for Malaria Eradication Dr. Omokhudu Idogho, Managing Director of the Society for Family Health (SFH), emphasized the significance of leveraging digital technology for malaria surveillance.
