Nigeria’s electoral body has confirmed that it has received more than half of the funds earmarked for the conduct of the 2027 general elections, a development it says is enabling early preparations for one of the country’s biggest democratic exercises. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disclosed that it has so far received over ₦500 billion, representing more than 50 percent of its approved election budget. The commission described the release as a significant step toward ensuring adequate planning ahead of the nationwide polls. Speaking during an interview on Friday, Mohammed Haruna, INEC’s Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, explained that while the funding has boosted the commission’s preparations, there are still financial obligations from previous elections that need to be settled. Early Funding Gives INEC a Head Start According to Haruna, the release of more than half of the commission’s election budget provides an opportunity for INEC to begin key procurement and logistical activities well before the 2027 elections. He noted that preparations had already commenced even before the latest allocation arrived, with the commission working on acquiring additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and other critical election materials needed for the polls. Haruna revealed that senior ICT officials had recently travelled to China to conclude arrangements for the importation of new BVAS equipment, describing the technology as an essential component of Nigeria’s current electoral system. Outstanding Debts Still a Concern Despite the positive funding update, the electoral commission acknowledged that unresolved financial commitments from the 2023 general elections remain a challenge. Haruna said INEC still owes contractors approximately ₦6 billion, while more than ₦20 billion from its statutory allocation for the previous election cycle is yet to be released. He stressed that although the recent disbursement is encouraging, timely access to the remaining funds will be necessary for the commission to execute its election timetable without disruptions.
