The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has reached a new level of administrative development and now operates with structures similar to a state government, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said. Akpabio made the statement on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, during the commissioning of the newly completed Gomani-Dafa-Yangoji road project in Kwali Area Council, Abuja. The event was part of activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Representing President Tinubu at the commissioning, the Senate President praised the current leadership structure in the FCT, particularly the efforts of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, whom he credited with transforming the territory’s administration and infrastructure. FCT’s expanding administrative structure According to Akpabio, the FCT has developed several government institutions and administrative offices that have traditionally been associated with state-level governance. He highlighted the presence of an active Head of Service, Permanent Secretaries, parastatals, coordinators for satellite town development, and other agencies operating within the territory. Akpabio said these developments show a significant expansion in the way the capital territory is managed, describing the FCT as now functioning “like a full state” due to the combined efforts of President Tinubu and Minister Wike. While praising Wike, Akpabio referred to him as “Mr Project,” a nickname previously associated with his record of infrastructure delivery. He also noted Wike’s previous public service roles, including his time as Governor of Rivers State and earlier ministerial experience. Infrastructure drive behind the claim The remarks came during the commissioning of the Gomani-Dafa-Yangoji road network, a project aimed at improving transportation links within the Kwali axis of the FCT. The road project forms part of wider infrastructure activities being carried out across Abuja, including roads, urban development projects, and improvements targeting satellite communities. Since becoming FCT Minister, Wike’s administration has focused heavily on road construction and rehabilitation, with several projects launched across different districts and area councils. Why the development matters The FCT has a unique status in Nigeria because it is not classified as a state and does not have an elected governor or state assembly. Instead, it is administered by a minister appointed by the President.
