A prime example is Manchester United’s Andre Onana, who recently came under fire following a heated exchange with former teammate Nemanja Matic ahead of a crucial Europa League match. Andre Onana: A Case Study in Decline The Cameroonian goalkeeper joined Manchester United in 2023 after an impressive stint at Inter Milan, where he won the Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, and played in the Champions League Final. However, his performance at United has sparked concern. In a pre-match interview, Onana boldly claimed United were “way better” than Lyon, a statement that did not sit well with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic. He highlights that many grassroots football academies in Africa lack the specialized goalkeeper training necessary to develop world-class talent. “Goalkeeping isn’t something you can wing — it demands precision and expertise that young African players rarely get,” he added. While goalkeepers like Vincent Enyeama, Carlos Kameni, and Thomas N’Kono once shone, they remain exceptions due to the lack of structured development programs across the continent. The Way Forward for African Goalkeeping Talent To reverse this trend, African football federations and private academies need to invest in: Organizations like CAF (Confederation of African Football) and FIFA can play vital roles by launching continent-wide goalkeeper development initiatives. FIFA’s Talent Development Program is one such framework that could be adopted and localized.
