The Sokoto State Police Command has successfully apprehended two suspected car thieves believed to be part of a syndicate operating along the Sokoto-Birnin Kebbi road. In separate operations, the police recovered five stolen vehicles and detained another suspect in connection with the thefts.

Arrest Details and Initial Tip-Off

The suspects, identified as Austin Anthony and Mansur Abubakar, were arrested following a swift response by the command’s Striking Force Unit. A complaint lodged by two residents of the Badon Barade area in Sokoto, Adamu Muhammad and Kabiru Shehu, alerted the authorities to the theft of their vehicles—a Corolla LE (ash color) and a Pontiac Vibe—at around 4 a.m.

Acting on this tip-off, officers informed a checkpoint along the Birnin Kebbi road. This action led to the recovery of one of the stolen vehicles, which was being driven by one of the suspects, Anthony, near Bodinga town en route to Birnin Kebbi.

Previous Offenses and Recovery of Additional Vehicles

Police spokesperson ASP Ahmad Rufa’i revealed that Anthony had a prior history of similar crimes. He was previously apprehended in possession of three stolen vehicles, which were recovered during investigations by the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

During the latest investigation, Anthony confessed to the crime, leading to the recovery of two additional stolen vehicles and the arrest of another suspect.

Next Steps and Police Commitment

The suspects will face charges in court once investigations are concluded. ASP Rufa’i emphasized the command’s dedication to ensuring safety and eradicating criminal activity in the state.

“We remain vigilant and committed to protecting lives and property. We urge members of the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station,” he stated.
