Wamakko Secures Release of 60 Sokoto Prison Inmates, Offers Financial Support
In a significant humanitarian gesture, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, representing the Sokoto-North Senatorial District, has facilitated the release of 60 inmates from various correctional centers in Sokoto State. The lawmaker covered the fines of these individuals, enabling them to regain their freedom and reintegrate into society.
The released individuals had been convicted of minor offenses, including theft and public disturbances. In addition to securing their release, each freed inmate received ₦10,000 to support their journey home and transition back into their communities.
Legal Experts Commend Wamakko’s Initiative
During the official release event on Wednesday, Sokoto State’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Nasiru Binji, praised the senator’s intervention, describing it as a commendable effort toward decongesting overcrowded prisons.
“This initiative is highly praiseworthy, especially given the overpopulation in our correctional facilities,” Binji remarked. He was represented at the event by Barrister Umar Aliyu, who further stressed the importance of such interventions, particularly considering the recent meningitis outbreak in some parts of the state.
“This support couldn’t have come at a better time. With the current health concerns in our prisons, actions like these are invaluable. We urge other well-meaning Nigerians to follow suit,” he added.
NBA Advocates Alternative Sentencing for Minor Offenses
Also present at the event was Barrister Rashidat Muhammad, Chairperson of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Sokoto Chapter. She emphasized that the initiative aligns with the NBA’s advocacy for alternative sentencing, which promotes community service over imprisonment for lesser offenses.
“Our association has been pushing for non-custodial sentences, and this gesture is a major milestone toward achieving that goal,” Muhammad stated.
She further highlighted the timing of the release, which coincided with the holy month of Ramadan, allowing the freed inmates to celebrate Sallah with their families.
“Releasing these individuals at this time is not just about freedom; it’s about reuniting families and offering them a second chance,” she concluded.

Prison congestion remains a major challenge in Nigeria, with many inmates held for non-violent crimes due to their inability to pay fines.
