The Nigeria Police Force, led by IGP Kayode Egbetokun, will enforce mandatory third-party vehicle insurance starting February 1, urging compliance to avoid fines or imprisonment.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that the Nigeria Police Force will commence strict enforcement of the third-party vehicle insurance policy starting February 1.
This development was disclosed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, during a meeting in Abuja where the IGP received Olusegun Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).
IGP Egbetokun emphasized that both Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act of 1945 require all vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance before driving on public roads. He warned that non-compliance could result in penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or both.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to collaborating with relevant authorities to safeguard lives and properties across the country.
In his remarks, Commissioner Omosehin congratulated the IGP on his leadership milestones, particularly the launch of the Police Insurance Bank Ltd. He also requested the police’s assistance in ensuring strict compliance with third-party vehicle insurance laws, highlighting the benefits it offers for all road users.
