The 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reportedly intensified discussions regarding his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as strategic talks continue ahead of the 2027 elections. On Thursday, Obi held a private meeting with Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, in Bauchi, signaling possible political realignment efforts.

PDP Leaders Push for Obi’s Return

According to reliable sources within the Bauchi State Government House, Obi’s visit aimed to strengthen consensus among PDP governors regarding his potential reintegration into the party. Discussions also reportedly included his former running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Prominent PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have been actively urging Obi to rejoin the party. Their goal is to consolidate political forces to address Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.

A high-ranking source confirmed that Atiku had met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, seeking his support in persuading Obi to return to the PDP. The source emphasized that PDP leaders are eager to correct past mistakes, including zoning conflicts that contributed to their loss in the 2023 election.

Governor Mohammed Advocates a Unified Opposition

Following their closed-door meeting, Governor Mohammed affirmed his willingness to collaborate with Obi in building a strong opposition to challenge current leadership inefficiencies.

“Peter Obi remains the leader of Nigeria’s opposition due to his political stature. We need to unite, provide knowledgeable governance alternatives, and rescue this nation from mediocrity. I am ready to work with Obi to ensure we bring competent leadership,” Mohammed declared.

“Nigeria must prioritize tackling poverty. Without economic stability, criminality will persist. The North holds vast agricultural potential that can generate wealth and reduce dependence on external aid. I recently visited Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, to explore economic models that Nigeria could adopt,” Obi explained.

He emphasized the need for investments in education, healthcare, and youth empowerment, criticizing the current political landscape for neglecting these pressing issues.

“We must focus on real governance issues—hunger, poverty, education, and healthcare—rather than superficial debates. Political discussions should center on improving citizens’ lives, not trivial distractions,” he asserted.

“If I were Atiku’s adviser, I would urge him to withdraw and support younger candidates. Many of his former supporters are unlikely to back him again,” Galadima remarked.
