Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that his team faces an uphill battle against Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League showdown on Wednesday.
Despite leading 2-1 with just four minutes remaining in the first leg of their play-off tie, City suffered a 3-2 defeat at home. Now, heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, Guardiola concedes that their chances of progressing are extremely slim.
“Minimal Chances But We Will Fight” – Guardiola
Speaking ahead of the crucial match, Guardiola admitted, “The likelihood of winning at the Bernabeu from this position is almost negligible. Maybe one per cent, or even less. But as long as there’s a chance, however small, we will fight for it.”
The Manchester City boss acknowledged that his team’s performances this season have been below expectations, stating, “We have been far from our best, both in terms of results and overall performances.”

Despite the daunting task ahead, City will take encouragement from their dominant 4-0 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League. This win strengthened their position in the domestic league, keeping them on track for Champions League qualification next season.
Guardiola remained realistic about the upcoming challenge but welcomed the momentum gained from their recent win. “For one game, on Saturday, we played really well. It doesn’t change the bigger picture, but it’s always better to go to Madrid with a positive result behind us.”
