Deadly Explosions in Mushin Local Government Area

A devastating twin explosion struck a scavenging site on Taiwo Street in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin Local Government, Lagos State, on Thursday, leaving one person dead and at least eight others injured. Authorities suspect the blasts were caused by grenades found among scrap materials.

First Explosion: Scavenger Fatally Injured

Eyewitnesses reported that the first explosion occurred around noon when a scavenger unknowingly attempted to dismantle a suspicious metallic object resembling a rocket. The force of the blast was fatal, claiming his life instantly.

“They must have picked up the object from somewhere else,” said Jegede Taiwo, a local resident. “The explosion was so powerful it decapitated the man.”

Second Explosion: More Casualties and Property Damage

Hours later, around 5:00 p.m., a second explosion shook the area, causing significant structural damage to a nearby residential building and leaving more individuals injured. Witnesses at the scene confirmed that emergency responders rushed at least eight injured persons to the hospital for urgent medical care.

“We saw at least eight people injured, and they were taken to a nearby hospital,” Shehu Idris, another resident, stated.

Shocking Discovery: Grenade-like Objects Found

Videos circulating on social media revealed two suspicious items resembling rocket-propelled grenades at the site, raising serious concerns about how such dangerous explosives ended up in the hands of scavengers. The discovery has prompted fears about the presence of unmonitored explosives in the city.

Authorities Respond to the Incident

Following the explosions, police operatives and firefighters swiftly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and restore calm in the community. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is currently investigating the source of the explosives and working to prevent future occurrences.
