The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has achieved a significant milestone in its fight against drug trafficking, arresting 14,480 suspected traffickers and seizing 2.4 million kilograms of various illicit drugs between January and October 2024.
Landmark Achievements in 2024
During an oversight visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Narcotic Drugs to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, highlighted the agency’s commendable accomplishments:
- Arrests: 14,480 suspects, including 15 drug barons, were apprehended.
- Convictions: Secured 2,867 court convictions, surpassing records from the past three years.
- Drug Seizures: Confiscated 2.4 million kilograms of illicit drugs, exceeding last year’s figures.
- Cannabis Destruction: Cleared and destroyed 547,378 kilograms of cannabis plantations.
- Rehabilitation Efforts: Counseled and rehabilitated 6,655 drug users.
Community Impact
The NDLEA also intensified public awareness campaigns, conducting 3,064 sensitization programs in schools, communities, and workplaces, reaching over 1.3 million Nigerians.
Marwa spotlighted a historic achievement—the largest heroin seizure in NDLEA history, totaling 51.90 kilograms, at Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed International Airport in February.
Legislative Support and Calls for More Resources
Chairman Marwa commended lawmakers for their support and urged for sustained backing to bolster the agency’s operations. He noted the NDLEA’s progress, transforming from a resource-starved institution to a high-performing organization, but emphasized the need for further funding and equipment to achieve its full potential.
Rep. Abass Adigun, Chairman of the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs, praised the NDLEA’s resilience despite challenges. He assured the agency of the committee’s commitment to securing better funding, advanced tools, and an improved work environment for the agency’s personnel.
