Former Kaduna State Governor and a key figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the ruling party. He made the announcement on his verified Facebook page on Monday, revealing his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai’s Exit from APC: Reasons and Political Implications
El-Rufai stated that he had formally submitted his resignation letter to his ward in Kaduna after extensive consultations with his mentors, associates, and loyal supporters.
“As one of the founding members of the APC, I cherish the memories of collaborating with fellow patriots to merge different political parties into what became the APC. Since 2013, I had hoped that my personal values would align with the party’s ideology until my eventual retirement from politics,” he remarked.
However, he criticized the APC leadership, accusing them of disregarding internal grievances and weakening the party’s democratic structures.
Criticism of APC Leadership
According to El-Rufai, developments within the party over the past two years have demonstrated that those in control have no intention of addressing fundamental issues affecting the APC.
“The events of the last two years indicate that those currently steering the APC are neither interested in acknowledging nor resolving the party’s deteriorating situation,” he asserted.
Having played a significant role in APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, the former governor emphasized that he could no longer remain part of a party that has sidelined its members and rendered its structures ineffective.
El-Rufai’s Future in SDP and 2027 Elections
Now a member of the SDP, El-Rufai declared his commitment to uniting opposition parties in preparation for the 2027 general election. He called on opposition leaders to rally under a single democratic front to challenge the APC in upcoming elections.
“As a member of the SDP, my focus will be to engage and collaborate with opposition leaders and political groups, working towards consolidating a strong platform to challenge the APC in all forthcoming elections, including the 2027 general election,” he stated.
He further urged his supporters and all Nigerians passionate about the country’s progress to join the SDP, envisioning a Nigeria that stands as a beacon of hope and prosperity for Africa and the Black Race.
