Mudashiru Obasa Seeks Reinstatement After Impeachment
Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against his January 13, 2025 impeachment, filing a lawsuit before a Lagos High Court to demand his immediate reinstatement.
The lawsuit, submitted on February 9, 2025, names both the current Speaker, Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, and the Lagos State House of Assembly as defendants.
Obasa is challenging the legitimacy of his removal, arguing that the impeachment process did not adhere to constitutional provisions and legislative procedures.
Obasa Claims Impeachment Proceedings Were Unlawful
According to the court filings, Obasa contends that the January 13 plenary session where he was impeached was improperly convened and, therefore, unconstitutional.
His legal team argues that:
- The Lagos State Assembly did not formally reconvene before voting on his impeachment.
- The session took place during a legislative recess, making the process procedurally flawed.
- The impeachment proceedings violated the standing orders of the House and failed to meet constitutional requirements.
Obasa, therefore, seeks a court order to nullify his impeachment and restore him to his position as Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
Court Yet to Assign a Judge for the Case
As of now, the case has not been assigned to a judge, and no hearing date has been fixed. The legal battle is expected to test the constitutional limits of legislative impeachments in Nigeria’s political landscape.
