Man Utd Receive Owen’s Bold Advice on Casemiro Replacement

Former Manchester United forward Michael Owen has advised manager Michael Carrick to consider signing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United F.C. as the ideal player to replace Casemiro in Manchester United’s midfield.

The recommendation comes after Casemiro officially departed Manchester United F.C. following the end of the 2025/26 campaign, leaving the club with the task of finding a strong defensive midfield option capable of filling the gap created by his exit.

Casemiro played a major role during his time at Old Trafford, and replacing a player with his experience, leadership, and ability to control matches will not be an easy responsibility for the Red Devils.

However, Owen believes Mateus Fernandes possesses the qualities required to succeed in that position. The former England international described the West Ham midfielder as a talented player who could bring energy, balance, and technical quality to Manchester United’s midfield setup.

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton F.C. last summer and has attracted attention because of his performances and potential growth.

Speaking about Manchester United’s midfield situation, Owen explained that Casemiro’s departure leaves a major challenge for Carrick and the club.

“Casemiro’s shoes are big shoes to fill, aren’t they? A lot of people questioned him, but he delivered an incredible final period of the season, which shows the importance he had,” Owen said.

The former striker added that if he were making decisions for Manchester United, Fernandes would be among the players he would target.

Owen said Fernandes is a player he rates highly and believes the midfielder could be exactly what the team needs moving forward.

“If I was Michael Carrick or Manchester United, I would be looking at Fernandes from West Ham. I think he is a very good player and he has the qualities they need,” he added.

Manchester United are expected to strengthen their squad during the transfer window, especially in midfield, where finding the right replacement for Casemiro remains one of their biggest priorities.

Fernandes could represent a long-term option due to his age, technical ability, and potential to continue improving. If United decide to make a move, his arrival could bring a fresh approach to the club’s midfield plans.
