The Borno State Police Command has officially confirmed that 23 persons lost their lives while 108 others sustained injuries after a series of explosions struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

According to the report, the tragic incidents occurred at approximately 7:24 p.m. on Monday evening, causing panic and heavy casualties in different parts of the city. The explosions were reported at Maiduguri Monday Market, the entrance gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover, all of which are busy locations usually filled with residents and visitors.

In an official statement released on X by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Kenneth Daso, preliminary findings revealed that the blasts were suspected to have been carried out by suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The statement explained that the explosions led to severe destruction, resulting in the death of twenty-three individuals, while over one hundred people suffered different levels of injuries, ranging from minor wounds to life-threatening conditions.

Immediately after the attacks, a joint security response team made up of police tactical units, the Nigerian military, and other security agencies was deployed to the affected areas in order to control the situation and prevent further danger. The security operatives quickly secured the affected locations and restricted movement around the scenes to allow proper investigation.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit carried out detailed sweep operations across the affected zones to ensure that no additional explosive devices were left behind. This action was necessary to guarantee the safety of residents and emergency workers.

The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, personally visited the affected locations to assess the level of damage and monitor the response efforts being carried out by security agencies. During his visit, he expressed sympathy to the victims and their families and assured the people of Maiduguri that the police command remains fully committed to protecting lives and property.

Emergency response teams, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), quickly evacuated the injured victims to nearby hospitals. Medical personnel are currently providing treatment to those affected, while authorities continue to monitor their condition.

Security officials confirmed that calm has now returned to the affected areas, although surveillance and patrol activities have been increased across Maiduguri and nearby communities. The police stated that the strengthened security presence is aimed at preventing any further attacks and ensuring the safety of residents.

Authorities also confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the full details behind the explosions and to identify those responsible for the attacks. The police assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Residents have been advised to remain calm but alert, and to report any suspicious movement, object, or individual to the nearest security agency. The police also thanked members of the public for their cooperation and resilience during the difficult situation, while promising to continue working towards maintaining peace and security in Borno State.
