Lagos Traders and Consumers Celebrate Beans Price Drop

Lagos traders and consumers are expressing their happiness following a recent decrease in the price of beans. This comes after several months of rising costs, which had left many in the community concerned. According to interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, the price drop has brought a sense of relief.

Previously, beans had been sold for as much as N150,000 to N140,000 per 100kg bag due to a supply shortage. However, in recent weeks, prices have fallen to around N100,000 to N120,000 per bag, depending on the variety.

Mr. Yakubu Ahmed, a foodstuff trader at Agege Market, attributed the price drop to the fresh harvest of beans from the northern regions of Nigeria. He noted that in the past few months, prices had been soaring due to the scarcity of beans. However, now that fresh stock has become available, prices have decreased. For example, a paint bucket of honey beans, which was once priced at N12,000, is now selling for between N8,000 and N9,000. The price for the drum variety has dropped from N11,000 to N8,000, while mini honey beans now cost N6,500, down from N8,500.

Although the reduction is modest, it has brought relief to both consumers and traders. Mr. John Nwabueze, a foodstuff seller at Iyana-Ipaja, mentioned that the reasons behind the price drop remain unclear. He explained that while prices had been high in previous months, the recent price reduction has been a welcome change, with a bag of drum beans now costing between N100,000 and N110,000, down from N120,000.

Mrs. Cornelia Edet, a resident of Ketu-Ikosi, shared her happiness with the change in prices. She had been reducing her purchases when prices were high but was able to buy a paint bucket of honey beans for N10,000 recently, a significant drop from the previous price of N16,000. Similarly, Mrs. Sandra Obalelenge from Dopemu found that a paint bucket of beans, which had cost her N10,500 just two weeks ago, was now available for between N7,500 and N8,000.

While the reason for the drop in prices remains uncertain, consumers and traders alike are hopeful that the trend continues, especially during the holiday season when prices are often volatile.
