…Allege Senator’s Conduct Brought International Disrepute to the District
A coalition of Ebira indigenes spanning the five local government areas of Kogi Central has reaffirmed the legitimacy of the ongoing recall process against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The group dismissed allegations that the process is politically motivated, asserting that it reflects the true sentiments of the people.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Kogi Central Elites Forum (KCEF), represented by President Ibrahim Abdulazeez Ibrahim and Secretary Prince Akerejola Johnson, underscored the senator’s alleged role in tarnishing the district’s reputation. They emphasized that her actions had not only embarrassed Kogi Central locally but had also attracted global attention for the wrong reasons.
The forum urged the public to disregard claims suggesting that the recall initiative is being orchestrated by political adversaries, emphasizing that the people of Kogi Central are fully committed to the process.
“No external forces are behind this recall effort. Our people are firmly united in this cause. Ebira history attests to our resolute nature—we cannot be misled. Even her past supporters on social media have withdrawn their backing. We cannot compromise the integrity of our state or Nigeria for the self-serving actions of a lawmaker,” the statement emphasized.
The group referenced Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent controversy in the National Assembly regarding her designated seat, describing her behavior as “undisciplined and damaging” to the district’s image on a national scale.
Clarification on INEC’s Role in the Recall Process
Addressing speculation that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had discredited the recall exercise, the group clarified that INEC’s involvement comes only at a later stage.
“At this phase, we—the petitioners—are collecting signatures. INEC will only step in after we reach the required threshold for verification,” the statement explained.
Call for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to Return Home for Political Reorientation
The coalition stressed that the senator should return home to acquire deeper knowledge of legislative responsibilities. They accused her of prioritizing social media publicity over meaningful political engagement.
“As a community, we would stand by her if she had been wronged. However, in this case, she has misrepresented Kogi Central and set an unprecedented negative precedent in the Senate. We have examined the facts, and the reality is clear,” they added.
The recall initiative follows the senator’s allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio—claims that critics argue were politically charged, especially following disciplinary measures taken against her.
Kogi Central’s constituents maintain that this recall is essential to restoring the district’s credibility and ensuring that legislative representation aligns with ethical and professional standards. They insist that “the Senate is not a platform for social media theatrics but for serious governance.”
