A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command following a suspected petrol-fuelled attack that left his elder brother dead and the brother’s wife seriously injured in Gwaram Local Government Area.
The incident occurred late at night on September 29, 2026, at Nassarawa village, where police alleged that the suspect, identified as Abbas Ibrahim, entered his elder brother’s residence and set the room on fire.
According to the Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the incident happened at about 11:30pm.
Victim Dies From Injuries
After the fire, relatives reportedly took the injured couple to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the treatment of the victims, as well as the full extent of the surviving woman’s injuries, were not immediately disclosed.
Police Investigation Leads to Arrest
Following the incident, investigators began efforts to identify and locate the person allegedly responsible.
The police subsequently arrested Abbas Ibrahim in Sara town, also within Gwaram Local Government Area.
Authorities said the suspect claimed to be of unsound mind. However, that claim remains an allegation attributed to the suspect and does not, by itself, establish any medical diagnosis or legal finding about his mental state.
The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further investigation.
Police also said the suspect had been arraigned in court for prosecution.
What Happened on September 29?
Based on the police account released so far, the sequence of events is:
- September 29, 2026: The fire reportedly occurred at about 11:30pm in Nassarawa village.
- Immediately after the incident: Basiru and his wife were taken for treatment after suffering severe burns.
- After the attack: Police opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
- Subsequently: Abbas Ibrahim was arrested in Sara town.
- Investigation stage: The matter was transferred to the SCID in Dutse.
- Court process: Police said the suspect was arraigned for prosecution.
The police statement did not provide details about what may have triggered the alleged attack or whether there had been a dispute between the brothers before the incident.
Why the Case Matters
The incident highlights the potentially devastating consequences of violent disputes within households, particularly where flammable substances are allegedly involved.
It also raises questions that investigators will need to establish as the case progresses, including the circumstances leading to the alleged attack, the relationship between the suspect and the victims, the events immediately before the fire, and whether any prior threats or disputes had been reported.
Importantly, the police allegations will still have to be tested through the judicial process. The arrest and arraignment of a suspect do not amount to a conviction.
Police Urge Residents Against Retaliation
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, appealed for calm following the incident.
The police chief also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, urging members of the public to report suspicious behaviour, threats and disputes to law-enforcement authorities or other appropriate security agencies.
The investigation is expected to provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the fire and the events that preceded it.
