The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command successfully neutralized three suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an intense gunfight on December 19, 2024. The confrontation occurred in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area.

Sadly, the operation resulted in the loss of two brave police officers, who succumbed to injuries sustained during the exchange of gunfire.

This operation followed thorough investigations and intelligence gathering, which led the police to the suspects’ location. According to a police source, the suspects opened fire upon sighting the operatives. Three were killed, and two others were apprehended during the operation.

The police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrests of 20-year-old David Ifeanyichukwu and 24-year-old Abuchi Joseph. He disclosed that the suspects were involved in the November 12, 2024, abduction of Osuji Caleb Chimereze and three others, during which they also stole a Mercedes Benz and other valuables.

During the raid, the police recovered six AK-47 rifles, 131 rounds of live ammunition, a locally fabricated firearm, and two stolen vehicles. Okoye emphasized that efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the criminal syndicate who managed to escape.

The police command expressed deep sorrow over the death of the officers, commending their dedication and sacrifice in protecting the community.

In preparation for the holiday season, the Imo State Police Command is intensifying patrols and collaborating with other security agencies to ensure public safety. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the hotline 0803 477 3600.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all residents, especially during this festive period,” Okoye stated.
