IGP Mobilizes Special Force to Strengthen Security in Imo State

In response to escalating security concerns, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has dispatched the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) to Imo State to combat criminal activities. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to ensure residents’ safety and reinforce law enforcement presence in vulnerable areas.

The Imo State Police Command confirmed the development through its spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, who emphasized that the deployment is part of a broader strategy to enhance security across the state’s three geopolitical zones.

Strategic Deployment of Security Personnel

According to Okoye, over 60 specially trained officers have been assigned to curb crime, dismantle criminal syndicates, and tackle emerging threats to public safety. The unit will work in close collaboration with the State Police Command, local vigilante groups, and other security agencies to execute a comprehensive crime-fighting strategy.

These personnel will be strategically positioned across the state’s three senatorial districts, prioritizing areas experiencing increased security challenges. This targeted approach is expected to yield significant improvements in crime prevention and public safety.

IGP’s Commitment to Security in Nigeria

The deployment underscores the Inspector General’s unwavering dedication to combating insecurity across the country. The Special Intervention Squad, initially launched in July 2023, has played a crucial role in addressing nationwide security concerns.

Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, commended the IGP for this proactive move and extended appreciation to the State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, for his continued support, particularly in the provision of welfare and logistical assistance. Danjuma highlighted that the governor’s contributions have significantly boosted the morale of security personnel.

Recent Crime Incidents in Imo State

The latest deployment follows a surge in criminal activities in Imo State, including a series of kidnappings and other violent crimes. Recently, a Catholic priest, Fr. John Ubaechu, was abducted while attending a priests’ annual retreat.

Additionally, the State Police Command recently apprehended three suspected kidnappers, including a 22-year-old female PoS operator allegedly involved in the abduction of Mr. Sabinus Ibeh. Reports indicate that Ibeh paid a ₦2 million ransom before the suspects were arrested.
