Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s ongoing legal troubles have continued to attract reactions from political stakeholders across Nigeria, with concerns now being raised over his health condition while in detention.
Demola Olarenwaju, Senior Political Assistant to the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned the Federal Government against allegedly denying El-Rufai access to urgent medical treatment while in custody.
According to reports, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has been accused of refusing the former governor access to necessary healthcare despite concerns about his deteriorating condition.
The concerns were made public by Muyiwa Adekeye, an aide to El-Rufai, who alleged that the former Kaduna State governor is experiencing significant eye-related health complications while being held by the anti-corruption agency.
Adekeye stated that El-Rufai is reportedly suffering from swollen, reddish, and persistently itchy eyes that require immediate medical attention. However, he claimed that requests for proper medical treatment have not been granted.
The situation has generated discussions among political observers and supporters, particularly regarding the treatment of individuals facing legal proceedings while in government custody.
El-Rufai was arrested earlier this year at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Following his arrest, he was arraigned before a court on allegations relating to abuse of office and money laundering during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
