The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially relieved the state’s Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, of his duties with immediate effect as part of efforts to restructure and strengthen the public service sector.

This development forms part of the administration’s broader strategy aimed at reforming the civil service in order to improve operational efficiency, reinforce discipline, and enhance the quality of services delivered across government ministries, departments, and agencies.

Background to the Decision

Before this development, Abdullahi Musa had already completed his official tenure as a civil servant in 2024. However, despite the expiration of his service period, the government retained him in the role to continue overseeing the activities of the state’s civil service structure.

His continued stay in office generated discussions in certain quarters regarding the extension of his tenure. Nevertheless, the administration allowed him to maintain his position for some time in order to ensure stability within the state civil service framework.

Official Announcement from the Government

The announcement regarding his removal was disclosed in an official statement released on Tuesday evening by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, the government has now concluded that a change in leadership is necessary in order to further reposition the state’s public administration system and introduce renewed reforms.

The spokesperson explained that the decision aligns with the administration’s ongoing efforts to rebuild the civil service into a more responsive, disciplined, and performance-driven institution capable of supporting government policies and development goals.

Governor Yusuf Appreciates Outgoing Head of Service

While announcing the change in leadership, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to Abdullahi Musa for his years of dedication and commitment to the development of the state’s civil service.

The governor acknowledged the contributions he made during his tenure and wished him success in his future pursuits.

According to the governor:

“We wish him the very best in his future endeavours and pray for his continued success in all aspects of life.”

The administration emphasized that the transition is part of routine institutional restructuring and is intended to strengthen governance structures within the state.

Appointment of Acting Head of Service

Following the development, the governor has approved the appointment of Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, who currently serves as the Permanent Secretary for Administration and General Services at the Cabinet Office, to act as the Head of Service.

She will assume the position in an acting capacity while the government undertakes the process of appointing a substantive Head of Service.

Her appointment is expected to ensure continuity in the daily operations of the civil service while the government completes its leadership transition plans.

Handover Directive

The government has instructed the outgoing Head of Service to formally transfer all official responsibilities and administrative duties to the acting Head of Service.

The handover process is expected to be completed no later than Wednesday, 11th March 2026, to allow the new leadership to immediately assume control of the office and continue the coordination of the state’s civil service operations.
