Four Edo Lawmakers Defect To APC, Boosting Party's Majority In State Assembly

BENIN CITY – In a significant political shift, four members of the Edo State House of Assembly, previously elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), strengthening the ruling party’s hold on the legislature.

The lawmakers who switched allegiance include Hon. Donald Okugbe (Akoko-Edo Constituency II – PDP), Hon. Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon Constituency II – LP), Hon. Richard Edosa (Oredo West – PDP), and Hon. Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South East – PDP). Their defection marks a pivotal moment in Edo State politics.

Reasons Behind the Defection

Speaking on behalf of the group, Hon. Richard Edosa cited internal crises within their former parties as the primary reason for their move to APC.

“There have been deep-seated divisions within the PDP at all levels, from national down to the ward level. The instability within the party made it difficult to deliver effective governance. We believe APC represents unity, stability, and progress,” Edosa explained.

He further expressed confidence in Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership and the administration’s vision for Edo State.

“We are convinced of the governor’s developmental agenda and the leadership direction of President Bola Tinubu. Aligning with the APC is a step towards advancing Edo State’s growth. We are committed to working with the party to build a better Edo,” he added.

Impact of the Defection on Edo Politics

With the lawmakers’ defection, APC has secured a majority in the Edo State House of Assembly. Minority Leader Hon. Eric Okaka (APC – Owan East) welcomed the move, emphasizing its significance in facilitating legislative collaboration with the governor.

“Before now, we were in the minority, but this defection has given us the upper hand. With an APC-led majority, we are positioned to drive progressive policies that will transform Edo State,” Okaka stated.

APC Leadership’s Response

The Chairman of APC in Edo State, Emperor Jaret Tenebe, officially welcomed the defectors at the party’s secretariat, presenting them with the party’s symbol. He assured them of fair treatment and equal participation in party activities.

“These lawmakers bring valuable experience, and their decision to join APC reflects their trust in Governor Okpebholo’s leadership. We remain committed to promoting economic growth, education, security, and social stability in Edo State,” Tenebe said.

With APC now controlling the majority in the assembly, Governor Okpebholo is expected to gain stronger legislative support, which will further shape the state’s political and developmental trajectory.
