Cause of the Fire
Livingstone Membere, President of the Kalabari Youths Federation (KYF), revealed that repeated shelling by security agencies in their bid to combat oil theft was a direct cause of the spill, which eventually ignited the fire. Membere, who led journalists to the scene, condemned the situation, highlighting its devastating impact on the environment and the livelihoods of local residents.
Condemnation from Civil Society Organizations
Civil society organizations, including the Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) and Defense for Human Rights and Democracy (DHRD), expressed outrage at the negligence displayed by the federal and state governments, along with NNPCL and other regulatory agencies. Despite the fire raging for four days, no significant effort was made to extinguish it or mitigate its environmental impact.
Chima Williams, Executive Director of EDEN, criticized the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and other agencies for failing to protect the environment and residents. “This level of negligence is unacceptable,” Williams stated. “An oil spill, let alone a fire, should not persist for this long. The ecological damage and health risks are immeasurable, especially for a community already grappling with environmental challenges.”
Health and Environmental Risks
Williams further emphasized the dangers posed by the chemical exposure resulting from the spill and fire, particularly in the sensitive riverine ecosystem. He called for immediate action from all relevant agencies to address the crisis and ensure that oil theft is handled in an environmentally responsible manner.
Calls for Action and Threat of Protests
DHRD Chairman Clifford Christopher warned that failure to act swiftly would result in mass protests and potential legal action. Christopher lamented the longstanding neglect of Niger Delta communities, which have borne the brunt of oil exploration’s adverse effects for decades.
“The Niger Delta region has endured environmental degradation for far too long,” Christopher declared. “This fire is yet another chapter in the ongoing suffering of host communities. Immediate remediation, restoration, and compensation are non-negotiable.”
Christopher issued a seven-day ultimatum to the federal government, NNPCL, and relevant agencies to extinguish the fire, restore the affected environment, and compensate impacted communities. Failure to meet these demands, he warned, would trigger widespread protests and legal measures.
