Federal High Court Postpones Yahaya Bello'S Bail Ruling To December 10

Federal High Court Postpones Yahaya Bello’s Bail Ruling to December 10

The Federal High Court in Abuja has deferred its decision on the bail application of Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi State, and two other co-defendants to December 10.

Overview of the Case

The trio—Yahaya Bello, Umar Oricha, and Abdulsalami Hudu—are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over a 16-count charge involving an alleged N110 billion fraud. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Bail Application Proceedings

During the hearing, Justice Maryanne Anenih presided over the case. Yahaya Bello, listed as the 1st defendant, strongly denied the allegations. After their pleas were entered, Joseph Daudu, counsel to the defendants, submitted a motion requesting bail for the former governor.

Kemi Pinheiro, the EFCC counsel, opposed the bail request, arguing that a previous application for bail had expired in October. In response, Daudu clarified that the only valid bail application was filed for Bello on November 22 and was still relevant. He supported the motion with a written address and affidavit, emphasizing that the court should consider the new application.

Current Status

Justice Anenih ruled that the defendants would remain in EFCC custody until the next hearing. Meanwhile, the EFCC has intensified its legal efforts to pursue the alleged fraud case, which involves a staggering N110 billion.
