Ex-Convict Arrested For Armed Robbery At Benin Church Days After Prison Release

Ex-convict John Agbontean was arrested for armed robbery at a Benin City church just two days after being released from prison.

An ex-convict, John Agbontean, was apprehended by the Edo State Police Command for his alleged involvement in a robbery incident at a church in Benin City, just two days after completing a jail term.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Joel Yamu, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. According to the PPRO, the robbery occurred at the Restoration Gospel Ministry located at No. 11 Oviasuyi Street, off Ogiemwenke in Benin City.

John Agbontean, armed with a cut-to-size gun, was caught attempting to rob the church during its end-of-year harvest thanksgiving service. The suspect had recently been released from Oko Prison in Benin City on December 19, 2024.

During interrogation, Agbontean admitted to being an ex-convict and revealed that he collaborated with an accomplice named Ola (surname unknown), who managed to escape arrest. The duo reportedly conspired to rob the church of its offerings, but the plan was thwarted when Agbontean was arrested on-site.

Police operatives are currently investigating the incident and pursuing Agbontean’s accomplice.
