Popular Nigerian music producer and Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, recently expressed his displeasure with a food vendor who gifted him a plate of nkwobi and later requested something unexpected in return—a free performance by Rema, one of his top artists.
In a video that went viral on his official Instagram page, Don Jazzy recounted the surprising exchange. He revealed that the vendor approached him with an unsolicited offer of nkwobi, a traditional Igbo delicacy, which he initially declined. However, after persistent persuasion, he accepted and enjoyed the dish.
To his astonishment, the same vendor later asked if he could allow Rema to perform for free at her upcoming event. Shocked by the request, Don Jazzy issued a firm warning during the clip:
“Nobody should give me free gifts again. I’m not interested.”
The music executive explained that situations like this are why he avoids accepting unsolicited gifts, emphasizing the unrealistic expectations some people attach to such gestures.
He humorously questioned the logic behind the proposal:
“You gave me nkwobi I didn’t ask for. After insisting, I ate it. Then you turn around and ask me to bring Rema. How does that make sense? Is there a conversion rate that values Rema’s performance at the price of nkwobi?”
This encounter stirred conversations online, highlighting the awkward dynamics that can arise from gift-giving in professional relationships.
