Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Russia could be implemented immediately if sufficient international pressure is placed on the Kremlin. He made this statement on Sunday during a joint press briefing with Czech President Petr Pavel in Prague.
Zelenskyy emphasized that without intensified efforts from Ukraine’s allies, Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to take serious action to stop the war.
“Without stronger pressure, we believe Russia will not adopt any meaningful steps to halt the conflict. Today is the 54th consecutive day that Russia has disregarded the American initiative for a full ceasefire,” he noted.
Zelenskyy stressed that an immediate truce could commence even today, ideally lasting at least 30 days to allow diplomatic avenues to progress constructively.
LMSINT MEDIA earlier reported that President Putin had announced a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 10, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany during World War II. However, Zelenskyy dismissed this as insufficient, urging instead for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, aligning with a U.S. peace initiative introduced in March.
Zelenskyy also highlighted the Czech Republic’s ongoing support since Russia launched its invasion in 2022, noting Prague’s leadership in providing Ukraine with large-calibre ammunition.
The Ukrainian President criticized Russia’s planned May 9 military parade, stating that rather than showcasing tanks, President Putin should focus on resolving the conflict.
“Three key actions are necessary now: heightened sanctions on Russia, unwavering assistance to Ukraine, and stronger defense partnerships throughout Europe. Russia must recognize that Europeans are ready to defend themselves,” Zelenskyy concluded.
