Boko Haram Fighters Use Superior Weapons Compared to Soldiers – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has made a bold statement concerning the ongoing war against Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria, asserting that members of the terrorist group often possess better weapons and ammunition than the Nigerian Army.

Jonathan, who led Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, revealed that contrary to common belief, the Boko Haram fighters are not impoverished or starving individuals. Instead, he emphasized that these insurgents are heavily armed and financially supported, which gives them a frightening advantage over government troops during confrontations.

According to the former president, during his administration, intelligence reports consistently showed that Boko Haram members had access to high-grade arms, sometimes more advanced than what Nigerian soldiers used in combat. He explained that this reality complicated the country’s counterterrorism operations and made it difficult to achieve immediate victory.

Jonathan noted that while the Nigerian government has continued to invest massively in the defense sector, the insurgents’ external support networks—believed to be funded through international terrorist groups and illegal arms channels—pose a significant threat to the nation’s stability. He stressed that understanding these networks is crucial in effectively tackling terrorism across the region.

He added that the Boko Haram crisis was never purely about religion or poverty but rather about extremist ideology, political manipulation, and access to sophisticated weaponry. The former leader urged continued collaboration between Nigeria and global allies in curbing the spread of arms into the country and promoting intelligence sharing.

Jonathan also used the opportunity to commend the Nigerian Armed Forces for their dedication and sacrifice in protecting the nation despite limited resources.
