Abuja On Thursday, the Defense Headquarters (DHQ) issued a warning to fighters and terrorist leaders to surrender or face execution by Nigerian military forces. Additionally, according to the military administration, 481 terrorists were killed by troops in October. During the bimonthly media briefing on troops’ operational victories throughout the country, Major General Edward Buba, Director, Defence Media Operations (DMO), informed the media of this. “Troops have done an amazing job of significantly dismantling the terror groups across the country, in various theaters of operations,” said General Buba. “Undermining the capabilities of these terror groups and their allies is still our strategy.” “Simultaneous strikes on several terrorist enclaves and hideouts across the country were conducted by troops,” he said. “The Air Force conducted targeted bombings and air interdictions on these terrorist strongholds and hideouts, reducing their ability to fight. The terrorists are well aware of our superior military might. They have two choices: give up or perish on the battlefield. Accordingly, “some terrorist leaders, commanders, and combatants have indicated to surrender,” General Buba disclosed. For that reason, we are opening a surrendering corridor. Additionally, he said, “481 terrorists were neutralized by troops in October 2024.” In addition, 741 people, including terrorists, were detained by the troops. In Ibadan, two officers from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Oyedepo Samuel and Waheed Quadri, were attacked by tricycle riders and hoodlums while on duty. The incident occurred at the Water Corporation gate in Ibadan, where the officers were struck with iron rods, stones, and sticks, causing serious injuries. Eyewitnesses reported that the officers had stopped a commercial tricycle that was blocking the road and causing traffic congestion. While they were transporting the tricycle to the Agodi Gate command unit, they were ambushed by a group of angry tricycle riders and hoodlums. A good Samaritan intervened, helping the officers escape the mob. The injured officers are currently receiving medical treatment at the State clinic in the Secretariat, Ibadan. The Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd.), confirmed that seven individuals were arrested in connection with the attack. He condemned the assault, expressing his dismay that officers who are dedicated to maintaining road safety are being targeted. Adesagba assured that the OYRTMA will continue its efforts to enforce road orderliness and will not be intimidated by such attacks. The arrested suspects are being held at the Idi-Ape police station, and they will face legal consequences for their actions. The suspects were brought before the Magistrate District Court 1, Ibadan North East, on charges of assault. Each suspect was granted bail with one surety and a bond of N100,000. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has attributed Thursday’s national grid collapse to ongoing maintenance and repair activities in the power sector. TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, outlined this in a recent statement. Mbah explained that the grid experienced an incident at approximately 11:29 am on Thursday due to a sudden spike in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz. She noted that recovery operations were initiated immediately, successfully restoring power to the Abuja area within 28 minutes, though many residents reported continued outages following an earlier grid collapse on Tuesday. Mbah specified that the frequency spike originated from challenges at one of TCN’s substations, necessitating its shutdown to prevent further issues. She emphasized that significant repair efforts are ongoing, targeting crucial transmission infrastructure. These include the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro–Mando route, upgrades at the Jebba Substation, and work on the second Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV transmission line. “Following an investigative report on past grid failures, TCN has begun addressing the identified vulnerabilities within the transmission system,” Mbah noted. She highlighted that measures are in place to close these gaps, improve grid stability, and enhance resilience, incorporating technical and strategic upgrades recommended by the review committee. However, Mbah cautioned that some instability is expected to continue until all major repairs are finalized. “We acknowledge the inconvenience caused by these disruptions and seek public understanding and patience during this period,” she said. She reassured that TCN is dedicated to boosting the reliability of the power supply, recognizing its critical importance to Nigeria’s economic and social well-being. “We are taking every necessary step to secure long-term grid stability and addressing infrastructure challenges such as vandalism,” Mbah added. Meanwhile, Thursday’s grid collapse marked the second such event within days, adding to the tally of 10 grid failures since January 2024. Reports indicated that as of 11 am on Thursday, the national grid could only generate 2,323 megawatts, which later plummeted to zero by noon. Earlier, the day’s peak generation reached 3,743 megawatts at 10 am. The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the rise of a new terrorist group, known as ‘Lukarawas,’ which is worsening security challenges in northwestern Nigeria. This revelation was made by Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, during a press briefing on military activities held in Abuja on Thursday. Maj.-Gen. Buba stated that the group emerged from the Republic of Niger following a coup that disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger. He explained that the terrorists began to infiltrate northern Sokoto and Kebbi States from the Niger Republic and the Mali region, with their activities increasing after the coup in Niger. Before the coup, joint border operations with Nigerien security forces helped prevent terrorist activities. However, the lack of collaboration post-coup created opportunities for the terrorists to exploit challenging terrains and penetrate remote parts of the northwestern region, spreading their extremist agenda. Buba noted that the group’s presence was initially accepted by local communities, who mistakenly believed the group had good intentions and did not report their movements to security agencies. Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, the Rector of Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary located in Ivhianokpodi, Agenebode, Edo State, who was kidnapped by suspected herdsmen in Etsako East Local Government Area, has been released. According to LMSINT MEDIA, Oyode was taken on October 27 during an attack on the Catholic Diocese of Auchi. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on a Sunday, during a prayer session and Benediction when priests and seminarians were present. Reverend Father Peter Egielewa, Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, released a statement providing details of the event. The statement, titled “Diocesan Minor Seminary Attacked, Rector, Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode Abducted,” mentioned that on October 27, 2024, gunmen attacked the seminary at approximately 7 p.m., interrupting the evening prayers. During the attack, the rector was taken and led away into the forest. The statement added that the Vice Rector and all seminarians were unharmed and relocated for safety pending enhanced security measures. Authorities were notified, and assistance was awaited to secure the release of Fr. Oyode. The Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary was founded in 2006 by the Catholic Bishop of Auchi, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, with over 500 graduates produced since its inception. The Diocese urged the public to join in prayers for Oyode’s safe return. Fr. Oyode Released After 11 Days Reports surfaced on Thursday confirming Fr. Oyode’s release after 11 days of captivity. Although no official church or police statement has been issued regarding his release, a Catholic community member’s Facebook post confirmed it. The post read: “Good NEWS, Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi has been released from the kidnappers’ den. Indeed, what God cannot do does not exist. Thank you all for your unrelenting passion for God’s servant and prayers.” It was reported that during the abduction, Oyode negotiated the release of the students initially captured with him and offered himself instead. Two days after the incident, the kidnappers demanded a ₦200 million ransom. However, it remains unclear if any ransom was paid for his release.
