However, this increasing reliance on so-called “love potions” has serious, often overlooked consequences, including silent health risks and untimely deaths. A Thriving Market, But At What Cost? The global pursuit of intimacy-enhancing remedies is not new. From ancient herbal mixtures to modern pharmaceuticals, humans have long sought ways to enhance their sexual experiences. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, the aphrodisiac market has become a multi-million-dollar industry, with little regulation to protect consumers. Locally produced aphrodisiacs have also flooded the market. Products like Bruntashi (Hausa Viagra), Coco Samba, Jekonmo, Mudet, Japata, Monkey Tail, and Koboko are easily accessible. These come in various forms, including alcoholic beverages and herbal mixtures, often sold by unqualified individuals. Dangerous Consequences The misuse of unregulated aphrodisiacs is leading to alarming outcomes. Reports of men mysteriously dying after sexual encounters at home or in hotels are on the rise, with aphrodisiacs often implicated. The health risks are not limited to sudden deaths; prolonged use can result in severe damage to internal organs and reproductive health. This growing concern has even caught the attention of urologists, who warn about the long-term dangers of consuming these substances. A few months ago, NAFDAC seized aphrodisiac products worth ₦12 million during routine patrols in Sokoto. According to NAFDAC State Coordinator Garba Adamu, these operations revealed the alarming scale of unregistered products circulating in local markets.
