Nigeria’s gas production rose by 2.9% to 226,747.05 MSCF in November 2024. Local consumption increased by 1.6%, while exports climbed 6.9%, according to the latest NUPRC report. Nigeria experienced a 2.9% month-on-month (MoM) increase in gas production, reaching 226,747.05 million standard cubic feet (MSCF) in November 2024, up from 220,396.45 MSCF recorded in October 2024. On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the nation’s gas output showed a slight growth of 0.02%, totaling 2,292,951 MSCF between January and November 2024, compared to 2,292,471 MSCF produced during the same period in 2023. Of the total gas produced in 2024, approximately 606,658 MSCF was consumed domestically, marking a 1.6% increase compared to the 596,861 MSCF consumed in the previous year. Additionally, 829,156 MSCF was exported, reflecting a 6.9% rise from the 775,547 MSCF exported in the same period of 2023. This export growth has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) remained silent on the latest production figures, but industry experts noted that oil continues to dominate Nigeria’s energy sector compared to gas. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s oil production, including condensates, surged by 13.3% year-on-year (YoY) to 1.7 million barrels per day (bpd) in November 2024, compared to 1.5 million bpd in the same month of 2023. On a MoM basis, oil output also increased by 10% from October’s 1.5 million bpd. Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE), highlighted the continued dominance of the non-oil sector in Nigeria’s economy. In his 2025 economic outlook, he noted that the non-oil sector contributed 94.43% of the country’s GDP in Q3 2024, while the oil sector accounted for just 5.57%. However, he pointed out a critical structural issue: despite its lower GDP contribution, the oil sector generates approximately 90% of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, while the non-oil sector, with its higher GDP share, contributes only about 10%. On January 4, 2025, the Nigerian military successfully neutralized 34 Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists during a fierce confrontation in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State. However, Nigerian troops, supported by the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), vigilantes, and hybrid forces, repelled the attack effectively. During the clash, the reinforcement team encountered an improvised explosive device (IED), injuring a vigilante commander. Despite this, they arrived promptly and overwhelmed the fleeing insurgents. The air component of Operation Hadin Kai further intensified the counteroffensive with precise airstrikes on the retreating militants. A battle damage assessment confirmed that 34 terrorists were killed, while 23 AK-47 rifles and over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were seized from the attackers. Regrettably, six brave soldiers were lost in action. The names of the deceased have been withheld pending official notification of their next of kin. For the North Central region, similar moderate dust haze and visibility levels are projected. Meanwhile, southern inland areas will experience patches of clouds mixed with a hazy atmosphere, while coastal cities may face early morning mist or fog. As the day progresses, cloud patches alongside hazy conditions are expected to persist in the coastal regions. The northern region is anticipated to see slight dust haze with improved visibility throughout the forecast period. However, by Friday, moderate dust haze may reduce visibility to between 2km and 5km in this area. Localized poor visibility, less than 1km, is predicted in parts of Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states. NiMet also expects slight dust haze with better visibility for North Central areas and patches of clouds in a hazy atmosphere over southern inland cities. In 2024, the Nigerian Police Cybercrime Centre dismantled 5,049 cybercrime syndicates, arrested 751 suspects, and recovered billions in funds while earning recognition as Africa’s Best Cybercrime Unit by INTERPOL. In a significant move against cybercrime, the Nigerian Police Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) successfully dismantled 5,049 malicious domains, networks, and major cybercrime syndicates both within Nigeria and internationally in 2024. The Centre reported achieving 14 convictions and recovering ₦8.821 billion, $115,237, and $84,000, which have been returned to the victims as restitution. Over 751 suspects linked to cybercrime threats were apprehended and prosecuted by the NPF-NCCC’s operatives, known as Cyber Hawks. During their investigations, 685 devices were seized from cybercriminals, including 467 mobile phones, 137 laptops, 46 routers, four servers, one drone, and four Starlink devices. Additionally, authorities confiscated 16 houses, 39 plots of land, 14 land documents, and 26 vehicles tied to criminal activities. A total of 508 cybercrime cases were reported, including incidents of sextortion and cyberstalking. The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, and the Director of NPF-NCCC, Ifeanyi Uche, revealed that INTERPOL honored the NPF-NCCC with the award for the Best Cybercrime Unit in Africa due to their outstanding efforts. Regarding identity theft, business email compromise, and money laundering, the Force PRO disclosed that on December 20, 2024, the NPF-NCCC apprehended Douglass Victor, a key figure in a dark web-based cybercrime syndicate. The syndicate, led by Diepreye Samuel, targeted major corporations worldwide by compromising business emails to defraud companies and divert funds for personal use. Victor confessed to compromising customers’ email addresses and passwords, intercepting business communications, and rerouting funds to the syndicate’s accounts. Thousands of compromised email credentials were retrieved from his Skype account. Additionally, another arrest was made involving Egbo Martins, a 26-year-old from Delta State, accused of opening and renting bank accounts for cybercriminals involved in a WhatsApp hacking syndicate.
