The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that six soldiers lost their lives during an attack by ISWAP (Islamic State’s West Africa Province) and Boko Haram militants on a military base in Borno State. In a statement issued yesterday, DHQ reported that 34 terrorists were neutralized in the confrontation, with 23 AK-47 rifles and over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition recovered. The incident occurred on January 4, 2025, when a group of ISWAP/Boko Haram militants on motorcycles and gun trucks launched a surprise assault on troops stationed in Sabon Gari village, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack was reportedly a retaliation for the recent killing of one of their commanders and several combatants. However, the military foiled the ambush as patrol troops returning to base countered the assault swiftly. A reinforcement team, including elements from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), vigilantes, and hybrid forces, responded promptly, overwhelming the insurgents. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil (Matthew 15:22) In our last two studies, we reviewed two important mysteries about prayer: lifting up of our hands and praying in the night watches. There’s also another mystery about prayer that has to do with faith and worship. I’ll explain this with an intriguing story in the Bible. In Matthew 15:22, we read about a woman of Canaan who cried out to Jesus for help. The situation was dire; her daughter was afflicted by a demon, and the physicians couldn’t help. Despite her desperate plea, the Lord Jesus initially remained silent. Verse 23 says, …he answered her not a word…. The Master’s silence didn’t deter the woman as she remained importunate. The disciples, uncomfortable by the Master’s silence, urged Him to rather send the woman away because she was causing a disturbance. Finally, the Lord spoke, saying, _*”…l am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel”*_ (Matthew 15:24). Undeterred, the woman decided to add worship to her faith-request; the Bible says she came and worshipped Jesus, saying, _*”…Lord, help me”*_ (Matthew 15:25). At that moment, the conversation shifted; Jesus then responded with a seemingly strong statement: _*”…It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs”*_ (Matthew 15:26). Yet unmoved, the woman still expressed her faith saying, _*”…Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table”*_ (Matthew 15:27). Her response was a demonstration of great faith and humility. In verse 28, Jesus commended her; saying, _*”…O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt….”*_ Her daughter was healed from that very hour. This story reveals a profound lesson: worship can be the key that unlocks divine responses when it seems like there’s silence from God. The woman’s persistent faith and worship led to her miracle. Have you ever prayed and it seemed like you weren’t hearing anything from the Lord? You’re wishing you could hear from God and it seems as though there’s no response? Do what the woman did. In faith, worship the Lord profusely and sincerely, and you’ll get a response. Hallelujah! (Image Credit: Eva Marie Uzcategui/Getty Images/AFP) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum playfully criticized Donald Trump on Wednesday, suggesting that the United States should be renamed “Mexican America” in response to Trump’s controversial proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” During her routine morning press briefing, Sheinbaum showcased a historical 17th-century map where North America was labeled as “Mexican America.” She pointed out that the Gulf of Mexico’s name is officially recognized by the United Nations, flipping Trump’s renaming idea back on him with a tongue-in-cheek comment: “Why not call the United States ‘Mexican America’? It sounds quite nice, doesn’t it?” Despite her remarks, Sheinbaum clarified her intention to maintain positive diplomatic relations with the soon-to-be U.S. President. Trump, set to begin his second term on January 20, recently declared his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico, stating, “The Gulf of America has a beautiful ring to it. It’s fitting. Mexico must stop allowing millions of people to flood into our country.” He further accused Mexico of being controlled by drug cartels. Sheinbaum swiftly rebutted his claim, asserting, “In Mexico, the people rule.” As Trump prepares to assume office, he has intensified his criticism of Mexico, threatening heavy tariffs on Mexican imports if the country fails to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking across the border. Additionally, Trump has revived his earlier consideration of designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations. The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs. Shakirat Madein, to submit the Federal Government’s 2022 Consolidated Financial Statement to the Auditor General, as mandated by the 1999 Constitution. During a recent session in Abuja, the committee, led by Rep. Bamidele Salam, voiced concerns over the poor execution of the capital portion of the 2024 budget, which the Accountant General reported at a mere 25%. The committee noted that this limited implementation could hinder Nigeria’s economic growth objectives. Rep. Salam highlighted Nigeria’s lag in the timely submission and review of audit reports compared to countries like Kenya, Ghana, and Rwanda. He attributed this setback to the consistent delay in the submission of financial statements by the Accountant General’s office. Addressing the issue of low revenue remittances from government-owned enterprises, the PAC chairman stressed the need for more rigorous steps to prevent financial leakages. He recommended automating revenue collection processes and conducting regular audits to ensure accountability. The committee further instructed the Accountant General, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Interior to urgently resolve outstanding issues regarding the non-automation of revenue collection from foreign missions. This measure aims to improve transparency and efficiency in public financial management. Rep. Salam also revealed that the 2021 Auditor General’s report, recently submitted to the National Assembly, would be reviewed promptly after the passage of the 2024 Appropriation Bill. In her defense, Mrs. Madein cited the delay in submitting the 2022 financial statement as a result of insufficient data on government revenue from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). However, she assured the committee that significant progress had been made and committed to completing the process within two months. She also briefed the committee on various initiatives aimed at improving financial accountability, including a review of the 2009 Financial Regulations, which is awaiting the Federal Executive Council’s approval for implementation.
