A kerosene-filled tanker, reportedly transporting 45,000 litres of the flammable liquid, veered off control and overturned in the Ogbomoso area of Oyo State. According to reports from LMSINT MEDIA, the event took place on Friday at the Taki Roundabout, a busy junction within the town. Hon. Maroof Akinwande, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident during an emergency response update. “Upon arriving at the accident site, we encountered a trailer tanker with registration number KMC 127 ZQ from Kano. It was carrying a total of 45,000 litres of kerosene when it lost control and toppled onto an open road,” Akinwande stated. The fire service team acted swiftly to avert a disaster. They deployed chemical foam compounds to neutralize any fire threats and protect nearby properties. “We quickly took action by covering the area with a chemical foam compound. This preventive effort safeguarded properties valued at millions of naira,” Akinwande added. An Ebonyi State High Court in the Ohaukwu Judicial Division has sentenced four individuals to death by hanging for the murder of 26-year-old Mr. Chinonso Elom, also known as Oscar. The convicted individuals—Anthony Elom, Chibueze Onwe, Chief Chukwuemeka Ugah, and Uchenna Odono—were found guilty of conspiracy and murder. The incident occurred on February 6, 2023, when the four, along with an accomplice still at large, ThankGod Onwe, arrived at Chinonso’s business premises near Okwo Ngbo Main Market in a branded Sienna bus associated with a political party. They demanded information about Chinonso’s younger brother, with whom they had a prior disagreement. When Chinonso could not provide the information, he was forcibly dragged into the vehicle. Upon his resistance, Anthony Elom, also known as Tidy, shot him in the head with a shotgun, resulting in his immediate death. The murder sparked widespread protests by Ngbo youths, leading to the arrest of the four individuals, while the fifth suspect remains at large. They were charged with conspiracy and murder by the Ebonyi State government. During the trial, Justice Esther Otah stated that the prosecution provided evidence beyond reasonable doubt, including eyewitness testimonies and forensic analysis of the recovered firearm, which confirmed its use on the day of the murder. She emphasized that the act was a result of conspiracy, making all involved equally culpable, regardless of who pulled the trigger. Each convict was sentenced to death by hanging. Defense counsel, Barrister Chinedu Uwa, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict and plans to appeal. Media figure Yeni Kuti has shared an emotional insight about her late father, the legendary Afrobeat creator Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, disclosing that he was admitted into Trinity College of Music, London, in 1958 not for merit, but out of sympathy. According to her, Fela faced academic challenges compared to his siblings, which made their parents hesitant about sending him abroad. She said their parents had preferred that Fela remain in Nigeria due to his poor grades. However, his older siblings, who were already studying in London, tricked their parents by claiming that Fela had been offered a place to study medicine. Yeni recounted that upon Fela’s arrival in London, Trinity College of Music nearly rejected him because of his substandard academic records. It was only after the admission officer learned that Fela had travelled all the way from Nigeria that he was accepted—purely out of compassion. While speaking during a recent episode of the Your View show on TVC, Yeni Kuti said: “I want to tell a story about my father, Fela. Back in his secondary school days, his parents—both being academics—constantly pushed him to excel. His older siblings were already studying overseas. At the time, Fela and his younger brother were the only ones still living with their parents. Unlike Fela, who had average academic performance, his younger brother was doing exceptionally well. Their parents, therefore, were against the idea of Fela studying abroad. But Fela’s older brother insisted on having him in London, so they deceived their parents by saying he had gained admission to a medical school. That’s how Fela found his way to the UK. They ended up enrolling him in a music institution because Fela was already playing the piano. When he arrived at the school, the admission officer looked at his results and said, ‘It’s only because you’ve come such a long way that I’ll let you in with these grades.’ So, it was out of pity that he got into the school.
