The Nigerian Federal Government has called on the Katsina State Government to collaborate in its newly launched initiative, ‘Operation Save Corridor North-West.’ This program aims to encourage bandits to lay down their arms, release all kidnapped victims, and reintegrate peacefully into society.
Federal Government’s Initiative for Sustainable Peace
During a visit to Katsina Governor Dikko Radda on Wednesday, Maj.-Gen. Ebikunle Ademola-Ajose, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Sokoto, emphasized the importance of the program. He revealed that his visit served both as an operational assessment and as a directive from the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa.
Ademola-Ajose stated, “Some bandits have expressed a willingness to negotiate. While negotiations are not our primary strategy, addressing this persistent and troubling issue requires innovative approaches like this program.”
He explained that Operation Save Corridor North-West mirrors a similar initiative successfully implemented in the North-East, where bandits voluntarily surrendered their arms and reintegrated into society under laid-down terms.
As the Theater Commander of Operation Fansan Yamma, which oversees security operations in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Katsina states, Maj.-Gen. Ademola-Ajose disclosed that the CDS had reached out to all four states to encourage collaboration and ensure the success of this program.
Katsina State’s Perspective on the Initiative
In response, Governor Dikko Radda acknowledged the importance of community involvement for the peace initiative to succeed. He shared insights from a recent security meeting in Katsina, particularly regarding ongoing efforts in the Batsari Local Government Area.
According to Radda, “A committee has been established to develop a comprehensive strategy. The plan includes stakeholder engagement to secure community buy-in and the creation of clear conditions for acceptance.”
Governor Radda reiterated his firm stance on negotiations with bandits, emphasizing that any dialogue must be initiated by them. He said, “If they willingly surrender and request negotiations, the state government is open to listening and providing support for their livelihood and that of their animals. However, this must be done with careful consideration of all the challenges and implications.”
The governor acknowledged that while the bandits are part of the community, having been born and raised there, they made the choice to engage in criminal activities. He concluded, “If they choose to turn over a new leaf, we will welcome them back.”
