APC’s Elegbeji Emerges Winner of Ogun Bye-Election with 41,237 Votes

Adesola Elegbeji, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially been declared the winner of the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency bye-election, securing an overwhelming victory with 41,237 votes.

The bye-election, which was conducted on Saturday, came as a result of the vacant seat left by the late Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the former federal lawmaker representing the constituency, who sadly passed away in January following a brief illness.

INEC Declares Results

Announcing the outcome, the Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kazeem Bello, disclosed that the APC candidate polled 41,237 votes, far ahead of her closest rival from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who garnered 14,324 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) managed just 289 votes.

Breakdown of Votes by Local Governments

Providing further details in the early hours of Sunday, Bello gave a breakdown of the results across the three local government areas that make up the federal constituency:

• Ikenne Local Government Area (LGA): Out of 17,477 accredited voters, APC secured a decisive 10,227 votes, while PDP recorded 5,595 votes, and ADC trailed with only 73 votes.
• Remo North LGA: With 9,374 accredited voters, APC gathered 8,052 votes, PDP managed 992 votes, while ADC polled 37 votes and ADP received 43 votes.
• Sagamu LGA: Out of 32,574 accredited voters, APC recorded an impressive 22,958 votes, while PDP obtained 7,737 votes, and ADC secured 179 votes.

Official Declaration by INEC

At the conclusion of the collation process, INEC confirmed that Adesola Elegbeji had met all the legal requirements under the Electoral Act, having garnered the highest number of valid votes. She was subsequently declared the duly elected representative of the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency.

Other senior INEC returning officers who took part in the collation exercise included Richard Abayomi Sobayo (Sagamu), Akeem Adekunle Makinde (Ikenne), and Matthew Wheto (Remo North).

With this result, APC has further strengthened its political foothold in Ogun State, especially in the Remo axis, which has consistently been a key battleground for major political parties.
